The Back Page

Welcome to PCEE’s media /communications Web site.  We are pleased to provide you with this information, courtesy of our collaborators the Safe Energy Communication Council (SECC) www.safeenergy.org.

The ability to get your message on the air and in print is vital to the success of both your community organizing and issue education efforts.  The material presented here is designed to help you and your organization or coalition effectively get your message out to the public, policy makers and others in a most effective way.  SECC has been using and refining this material in their media skills workshops throughout the country for more than a decade.  Hundreds of environmental, conservation, energy, consumer and other public interest groups have used these materials successfully.

We have tried to make this site as user-friendly as possible.  The Navigation Page will help familiarize you with the site's navigation devices - devices designed to guide and orient you comfortably throughout the site.

While you may have a specific interest, like Preparing Basic Press Materials, or 15 Tips for Broadcast Interview we suggest you peruse the whole manual to get an idea of how all the parts fit together.  A great place to start is with the Media Strategy Planning summary section.  This summary will give you a tried and true ten-step method for creating an effective media strategy or communications plan to help you and your group reach the specific goals of your educational or advocacy effort.

You need to have no particular background or bring any special knowledge about media communications with you to this site. What we know is – anyone can effectively get their message out in a way that will meet the goals and objectives of your campaign. This site is a great first step on your path to understanding and implementing a successful media outreach campaign!

Scott Denman, the  executive director of the Safe Energy Communication Council, produced these media materials.  With  29 years of grassroots and national non-profit management experience, he has trained hundreds of educational and advocacy groups in media skills and strategy.  Mr. Denman also is a professional organizational development and team building consultant.
