Park ranger - a person who works in a park to protect the park and people who use it. Perennial - a plant or plant tissue which lives more than one growing season. Petiole - the stalk that supports a leaf and attaches the leaf to the twig. They can be round, flat, or square. Phloem - the layer in the trunk of a tree that carries sugars (food energy) created during photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the tree. Phloem is also called inner bark. Photoperiod - duration of daily exposure to light; length of day favoring optimum functioning of an organism. Photosynthesis - the process a plant uses to combine sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and sugar (energy). Pioneer Species - the first plants (e.g., weeds, thistle, shrubs bushes) or scrubby inferior trees (e.g., aspen, polar, birch) to grow naturally in a burned or cleared area. Primary Succession - type of succession following a disturbance that destroyed the seed banks and other reproductive means of trees and plants (e.g., glaciers, severe fires, and volcanic eruptions). Producer - green plants and lichens which produce their own food from sunlight, water and CO2 in a process called photosynthesis. Plants are called producers. Product - something used by humans that we have made from something else (a resource). Productivity - the rate at which biomass is produced per unit area. Promote - to encourage the growth of a particular tree or forest type. Public Trust - responsibility the public places on government to care for their interests. Pulp -
