2006 Summer Internship Program in Restoration Ecology

Madison Audubon Society, Inc.

Madison, Wisconsin

Objectives:          As a participant in this program, you will spend the summer in the field where you will participate in broad-scale landscape restoration and management, including work in prairie, savanna, woodland, and wetland habitats. The primary focus of activities will be invasive species control, including digging, pulling, cutting and girdling. We will also devote some time to early seed collecting, endangered species monitoring, and other activities as needed. In the process, you will: learn to identify both native and alien plants and learn about their life cycles and ecological requirements; learn to observe what natural conditions and processes have been altered in a landscape and how one goes about restoring them to desired conditions; and gain an understanding of management objectives and how they are developed for a variety of sites. Interns work as a team or teams, rotating daily between various locations within 40 miles of Madison. Eight to twelve internships will be available for the summer of 2006.

Program dates:    This is a full-time, 40 hours/week program from May 22 through August 18, 2006.

Continuing part-time intern opportunities may also be available during the 2006-07 academic year.

Stipend:               $4,320, which includes a $200 clothing/gear allowance.

Eligibility:            Applicants must be enrolled as an undergraduate, graduate or special student at a cooperating university, or accepted for enrollment planning to enroll in the 2006-07 fall semester. Academic credit may be available for participation in this program; each intern is responsible for making academic credit arrangements with her/his university. Applicants must be able to perform physical work outdoors.

Partners:             Sponsoring partners include the Madison Audubon Society, Riverland Conservancy, Savanna Oak Foundation, St. Benedict Center, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum.

Other:                  Interns are responsible for their own transportation between home and worksites (car pooling is encouraged), as well as housing, and other living expenses. Sturdy work boots, gloves and clothing, as well as sun, rain and insect protection are required. All tools will be provided.

How to Apply:     Application deadline to ensure consideration is Tuesday, February 28, 2006.  Later applications may be considered. Interview dates will be announced.
