Potawatomi State Park Naturalist Intern

 

Do you want to make a difference to park visitors?  Willing to live within one of the most beautiful parks in Door County, a short walk from Lake Michigan?  Are you independent and want to develop your own interpretive program?  Then working at Potawatomi State Park, located in Door County WI, is for you.  We are looking for a Naturalist Intern for the summer 2006 season.  This is a volunteer position with housing provided.   Gain valuable work experience while creating meaningful connections between park visitors and nature.

 

Duties include:

·        Develop and present hikes and nature programs to local audiences and campers

·        Prepare weekly press releases and posters

·        Assist with property special events

·        Assist with staffing and maintain the nature center

·        Keep accurate program records

·        Provide program information to campers via verbal and written announcements

 

Desired Qualifications:

·        Capable of performing job responsibilities under variable weather conditions

·        Requires knowledge of natural history, including plants and animals and the willingness to learn local park ecology and geology

·        Ability to communicate this knowledge to visitors of all ages

·        Ability to work with and involve strangers in conversation is a must

·        Knowledge of, and ability to use Microsoft Word and other computer software

·        Must have reliable transportation from housing site

 

Major:

·        Natural Resources or Environmental Studies, or Environmental Education and/or Interpretation, or Education, or Biology

 

This is an Unpaid Internship, which provides Free housing in lieu of salary. The Friends of Potawatomi State Park are offering upon completion of the internship (minimum of 320 hours) a $1000 stipend.  The schedule can be flexible that will allow interns the ability to seek outside employment with local businesses.  Must be willing to work most weekends and some nights.  The housing is located 15 miles from the park.  Intern must provide his or her own transportation.  Internship dates are approximately May 24, 2006 to September 3, 2006.
