WATER RESOURCES

(Positions Last Updated 4/27/2007)

Listed below are the current intern positions I have available at this time. I expect to have many more in the next month or so and I will update this file as I receive them (date of update will be listed as above).  You can access this page through the CNR Home Page under Careers & Opportunities – CNR Internships- Water Resources Internships.  As new positions become available you can view and download the position document and download an application form and complete it electronically. If you plan to apply for any internship please bring a completed CNR internship application (available on the web) to my office or my CNR mailbox.  I also need to know about positions that you are directly applying for yourselves.  You can just email me and let me know what positions you are applying for.  You can arrange your own internship with an agency if you have contacts.  After you have discussed the possibility of an internship with an agency it is very important for you to discuss the opportunity with me and provide me with the names and phone numbers of the agency contact person.  I will call the agency and make arrangements to the set up the internship and provide the University linkage.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Make sure that you pay special attention to the application deadline listed for each position and have your application turned in on time. Item 14 on the CNR Internship Application form requests that you rank your preference for an internship and you can do that by recording the position number listed below.  Also please make sure that you check off whether or not you would be willing to be considered for other intern positions under item 15.   Make sure that you include your e-mail address on the bottom of the first page of the application.  In some instances the agency may want to do a phone interview, personal interview (here or at the agency) so the notification process will vary with different agencies.  I will include any required materials in addition to the Water application form in the position descriptions listed below.   In some cases the agency may want you to apply directly to them and they may have different applications forms you will need to get from the web or me to apply for the position.  I will indicate how to apply for a position at the bottom of the position listing.  Please pay special attention to this.  It is important that you fill out a standard Water Resources Intern Application (available on the Water Resources web site) and turn it in to me regardless if I will be sending in your application or if you are applying directly to the agency.

21 FISHERIES INTERNSHIP   Location –Goodman, WI  AGENCY - Private Coleman Lake Club Inc.   Introduction:    The Coleman Lake Club is a private fishing and hunting club on approximately 9,400 acres located in the Northwest corner of Marinette County, Wisconsin.  The Club has a strong fly fishing and conservation tradition, and is seeking bright, motivated applicants to fill “seasonal” positions in a combined guiding and conservation/stream improvement program at the Club.  Although the primary and immediate need is in the guiding positions, individuals chosen will devote a substantial portion of their time in working to maintain and restore the trout streams on the Club’s property in an effort to enhance the Club’s clear and coldwater wild trout habitat. If you are an angler, this is an excellent opportunity to obtain some vocational experience and, perhaps an entry on your resume, with your love of fishing. Schedule:  Varied days and varied hours, including weekends, some evenings and holidays:  Normal guiding shifts would be 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM and/or1:00 PM to 4:30 PM and/or 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM;   Stream Labor shifts would be from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM if the entire day were to be spent on stream work;  Expect to have some days (all day) guiding, some days (all day) working in streams and some days spent working a mix of both guiding and stream work;  Expect your schedule to change at times from day to day; Expect few if any weekends off as this is the time that the demand for guides is the greatest;  Estimated work week to be between forty (40) and fifty (50) hours;  Employment would begin as soon as you are available in May, terminating late in August, depending on your time availability. Wages:  Hourly as agreed upon at the time of hire.  Payroll periods end every two (2) weeks and payroll     checks will be available in the manager’s office within ten (10) days of the close of the payroll period: You will receive 11/2 times your hourly rate for hours over forty (40) hours;       You will receive 11/2 times your hourly rate if you work Memorial Day, 4th of July or Labor Day;  As a guide, you will be able to receive gratuities for your services, an income that regular Club staff members do not receive. The balance of the position is that of stream improvement work.  Almost without exception this work will be all hand-work. It will involve, but is not limited to the removal of debris from streams, cutting and removal of alders and other obstructions, as well as some rehabilitation work on previously started projects. Guiding Duties:  Includes, but is not limited to:  Checking schedule daily for any changes - they occur more in the nature of additions than cancellations;  Greeting “client(s)” at the arranged time and have a boat key, life vests, creel, net, and cushions ready to go for the number of people (not to exceed two (2) individuals plus yourself) you will be guiding;  It is suggested that you also have with you a number of flies and fly leaders (available in the mgr’s. office), along with a few personal items such as rain gear, sunglasses, forceps, a clipper for cutting leader material and any other items you feel that you may need; If you have children (none under the age of 10 unless accompanied by a parent) you must retain and exercise, with discretion, the discipline of those children with or without adult supervision.  If a situation persists, please bring the matter to the manager’s attention;  It is pretty much self-explanatory in that guiding involves the rowing of a boat or directing the fisherperson in a position to best catch fish. You will also be responsible for the handling of fish as well as  recording the “catch” or the “catch & release” of fish in the appropriate places; You will also be required to know the fishing regulations of the Club and the State and these regulations must be adhered to.  If necessary, discretely inform your “client” of the applicable regulation. To insure that your “client” abides by the regulations, instruct your “client” that you cannot continue to guide for them unless they do so.  Any violations are to be reported to the manager; You must be alert to changing weather conditions and take the appropriate action as necessary to insure your safety as well as that of your “client”;  If you encounter “trespassers” while on the water, do not approach them but rather note description, time, place, etc. and notify the manager as soon as conveniently possible; You may fish (“catch and release” only) on Club waters in order to maintain and improve your knowledge of the fishing, when authorized by the manager.  You may not fish for your “client” except when giving instruction to them in fly fishing or spinning and casting; You will be issued a boat key at the outset of the season and that key must be returned at the close of the season.  The key is not to be copied or lent to any individual for any reason; and  You agree to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times, in both your actions and conversation.  “What goes on at the Club stays at the Club” whether it concerns members, fishing, or anything else at the Club.  Stream Work Duties:  Including, but not limited to: Working in and around streams to clean them of debris that is impeding the flow  of water;  Removal of beaver and beaver dams;  Removal of alders that are not advantages to the stream and are a hindrance to the fisherperson;   Installing instream devices;  Restructuring devices previously installed that are not properly set; “Water data collection 101” Limited supervision of ‘high school” students that are hired by the club to assist in stream work;  Tools that will be used include shovels, pick ax, hatchets, hand saws, etc. as well as chainsaws (tools and waders will be provided); Most work will be in accordance with “Guidelines for Management of Trout Stream Habitat in Wisconsin” (Wisconsin DNR Technical Bulletin #39 - 1967 by Ray White and Oscar Brynildson) and the Club’s consultant;  Application Process -
