WATER RESOURCES

(Positions Last Updated 3/30/2009)

Listed below are the current intern positions I have available at this time. I expect to have many more in the next month or so and I will update this file as I receive them (date of update will be listed as above).  You can access this page through the CNR Home Page under Careers & Opportunities – CNR Internships- Water Resources Internships.  As new positions become available you can view and download the position document and download an application form and complete it electronically. If you plan to apply for any internship please bring a completed CNR internship application (available on the web) to my office or my CNR mailbox.  I also need to know about positions that you are directly applying for yourselves.  You can just email me and let me know what positions you are applying for.  You can arrange your own internship with an agency if you have contacts.  After you have discussed the possibility of an internship with an agency it is very important for you to discuss the opportunity with me and provide me with the names and phone numbers of the agency contact person.  I will call the agency and make arrangements to the set up the internship and provide the University linkage.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Make sure that you pay special attention to the application deadline listed for each position and have your application turned in on time. Item 14 on the CNR Internship Application form requests that you rank your preference for an internship and you can do that by recording the position number listed below.  Also please make sure that you check off whether or not you would be willing to be considered for other intern positions under item 15.   Make sure that you include your e-mail address on the bottom of the first page of the application.  In some instances the agency may want to do a phone interview, personal interview (here or at the agency) so the notification process will vary with different agencies.  I will include any required materials in addition to the Water application form in the position descriptions listed below.   In some cases the agency may want you to apply directly to them and they may have different applications forms you will need to get from the web or me to apply for the position.  I will indicate how to apply for a position at the bottom of the position listing.  Please pay special attention to this.  It is important that you fill out a standard Water Resources Intern Application (available on the Water Resources web site) and turn it in to me regardless if I will be sending in your application or if you are applying directly to the agency.

POSITION DESCRIPTION  These are primarily field going positions. Students will perform a variety of tasks relating to stream habitat improvement and inventory of fish populations and habitat in lakes and streams.  Stream habitat work includes building log bank covers to stabilize eroding banks and provide wood structure in coldwater streams. Construction involves jetting cedar posts into the stream bed and bank to create a frame that is filled with pine stumps. All materials are nailed together and capped with field sod. Native conifer species are planted upslope from bank covers to provide a future source of shade and wood structure. Habitat work also may include installation of rock to provide spawning habitat for steelhead and brook trout.  Stream inventory tasks include use of backpack and barge electrofishers to assess fish community composition. In a sub-sample of sites, trout populations are estimated by multiple-run depletion methods. Habitat features including width, depth, substrate composition, stream flow and large woody debris are quantified at transects within electrofishing stations. Assessments also consider water temperature, channel shading, sediment load, bank stability, aquatic plant coverage and abundance of aquatic insects. Lake inventory tasks include use of fyke nets, trap nets, gill-nets, seines and electrofishing to assess fish community composition. Data collection includes individual fish lengths, scale samples for age/growth analysis and total weight by species. Lake inventory also may includes determination of temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles, water column transparency, and the status of various chemical parameters such as total alkalinity and pH. Habitat features such as aquatic plant coverage and large woody debris are assessed.  Other duties include entering field data into excel spreadsheets, operation of motor vehicles, outboard motors, pumps and generators, and minor equipment maintenance.  QUALIFICATIONS  Candidates must have a strong interest in fishery management and have completed course work in fishery biology, fishery management, limnology or closely related subjects. They must be able to work well with others. Reliability and good judgment will be required on a daily basis. Good physical condition is essential because this is primarily a field position that requires extended, moderate to occasionally strenuous physical exertion in a wide variety of terrains and weather conditions. A valid driver’s license must be in possession. Experience with chain saw operation or mechanical ability is desirable but not required.  LOCATION INFORMATION   Munising is a full-service community of about 3000 people located on the shores of Lake Superior adjacent to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Island. The area offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities and is located about 40 miles east of the city of Marquette (population 21,000) home of Northern Michigan University Information on the Hiawatha National Forest can be found on our web site located at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/hiawatha/  SUPERVISION, WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS  Much of the work will be done as part of a crew under the direct supervision of a Forest Service biologist or technician, but students will be expected to work independently on a regular basis. Sudents will generally be expected to work Monday-Friday, 8 hours/day, though the schedule will occasionally vary depending on the nature or location of work assignments, weather conditions and work crew preference.  Students need to be equipped with leather boots which are a minimum of 6 inches high long pants and long sleeve shirts to protect the body from the elements, scratches from sharp vegetation, and insect bites.  Weather can be quite variable so students will need to bring clothes/jackets for hot, cold, and rainy weather.  Any specialized equipment (i.e. hard hats, leather gloves, compass, chaps, waders, GPS equipment, etc) required by the Forest Service for specific tasks will be provided by the government.  Students will also participate in tail-gate safety discussions prior to starting any new activities and be thoroughly briefed on job hazards  HOUSING  Housing will be provided in a government bunkhouse located within walking distance of the Munising office.  Bunkhouse facilities are designed to be co-ed with individual bedrooms and common restroom and kitchen facilities. The program exemplifies the integration of research and education. As students conduct research, they will learn how to be a scientist, along with many technical, methodological and ethical issues that arise in scientific research.  Lodging and laboratory space for REU students will be provided by the University of New Mexico Sevilleta Field Station at NO COST. In addition, candidates chosen will receive a stipend of $4500 during the 11-week summer program (June1-August 14 2009).  We will also refund travel costs to and from the UNM Sevilleta Field Station up to $500.  Applications will be accepted from students at any stage of their undergraduate program (freshman to senior) and any discipline, so long as the applicant is interested in conservation biology and ecology.
