WATER RESOURCES INTERN PROGRAM |
The address for this site is: http://www.uwsp.edu/acad/cnr/affil/intern/water.htm
The intern program in Water Resources generally provides positions in Fisheries, Limnology, Water Chemistry, Watershed Management, Aquatic Toxicology and General Water Quality. The number and distribution of positions varies from year to year however the Fisheries and Limnology positions have historically been the most numerous. Most of the positions are located in WI, however a few positions may be located in surrounding states (eg. IL, MN, MI) or other locations in the US. Almost all positions are for work during the summer field season (mid-May through August). There may be a few positions available for the spring or fall semesters but these are generally rare. The duration and rate of pay varies widely depending on the agency, however most positions involve a 12-14 week commitment. All students are required to register for 3 credits of internship (Water 381) during the summer and 3 credits of Water 381we during the fall semester. Each student is required to complete a research project during the summer involving some aspect of the internship. During the fall semester the student will write a paper in scientific format about the project. The deadline for final completion of this paper is the last day of classes before Thanksgiving break. Each student will receive 3 credits of writing emphasis (in Water) for the paper and Water 483 - Limnology and Fisheries Research will be waived as a requirement for Limnology & Fisheries students. Please download the Intern Application form (Word 2.0 document file) and FILL IN THE APPLICATION USING YOUR COMPUTER then Email your application to me (attach the word document) at sszczytk@uwsp.edu.
SETTING UP YOUR OWN INTERN POSITION!!
It may be possible for students to initiate their own internship. This might be especially attractive to some students if they could live at home while working to save costs. If you are interested in doing an internship with a particular agency (private, state, municipal or federal) that you are familiar with you must provide the Intern Director with the name and phone number of an agency contact person. The Intern Director will then contact the agency to determine if they would be receptive to participating in the UWSP internship program and can facilitate the process of establishing the position. It is also possible for you to receive intern credits for internships organized and administered outside this campus. If you have any questions contact the Intern Director - Stan Szczytko room 331 CNR - 346-4181.
Please make sure that you type the application in an MS Word format (preferably the version that is on the Campus Network - Ver. 6.0) and that you maintain the spacing of the original application form to ensure that it is readable when I receive it. In some cases you may have to delete spaces after you type in your responses. This application is in table format so you can use the tab key to go from one cell to the next. When you save this file make sure that it has the Word extension on the file (.doc).

last updated 4/20/2004)
Listed below are the current intern positions I have available at this time. I expect to have many more in the next several weeks and I will update this file as I receive them (date of update will be listed as above). I have not as yet received most of the WI DNR positions. These positions will be posted on the web at the address http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr/internships/water/water.htm. You can also access this page through the CNR Home Page under Careers & Opportunities CNR Internships- Water Resources Internships. As new positions become available you can view and download the position document and download an application form and complete it using your computer. Please bring to my office or CNR mailbox 3 complete hard copies of your intern application. I also need to know about positions that you are directly applying for yourselves. You can just email me and let me know what positions you are applying for. You can also arrange your own internship with an agency if you have contacts. After you have discussed the possibility of an internship with an agency it is very important for you to discuss the opportunity with me and provide me with the names and phone numbers of the agency contact person. I will call the agency and make arrangements to the set up the internship and provide the University linkage.
