Program Highlights:
This three-week safari consists of:
-
A ten-day climb of Mount Kilimanjaro on a scenic route
-
Ten days of safari focused on wildlife viewing in Tarangire and Manyara National Parks
-
Exploring the Serengeti ecosystem (Ngorongoro Crater and Ndutu) and meeting tribal people (Hadza bushmen) near Lake Eyasi
-
Studying various forest and resource management issues in neighboring areas
Credit:
Participants enroll for three credits of Natural Resources 479/679 International Environmental Studies Seminar: Tanzania Africa - Int'l Management, with credit audit or pass/fail option (same fee). Graduate credits can be arranged at an additional cost.
Cost and Deadlines:
Approximately $6,900 - 7,400 for the three weeks based on 12 participants; this includes round-trip airfare, lodgings and meals, ground transportation, entrance fees, 3 credits UWSP Wisconsin resident tuition, tours, and lectures. Tuition surcharge of $250 for non-residents and approximately $70 for Minnesota residents (with approved reciprocity). A non-refundable deposit of $400 is required to hold a spot. Apply by October 15th, applications after this date may be accepted if there is available space; contact the International Programs office for availability and/or a registration form.
Eligibility:
Open to students and non-students alike. All participants registered for credits will be enrolled in a college course and will be expected to attend all meetings, lectures, and other scheduled activities before, during, and after the study tour. Pre-tour preparation and post-tour follow-up will be part of the requirement for credit. All participants must be able to participate in the program at the college level and stand up to the considerable physical rigors of this course. *Written permission from leader Dr. Hans Schabel is required to participate in this course.

-Professor Hans Schabel, a forest biologist with training in wildlife
management,
resided in Tanzania for 3 years and to date has conducted 31
study-abroad
programs, including six to East Africa.
-Dr. Schabel recently
authored a book on the "Forest Insects of Tanzania."
