Annual Private Well Water Quality Report

In 2003, 2,950 private well water samples were tested at the UWSP Water and Environmental Analysis Lab and entered into the Center's data base.

  • Of these 8% of those contained an unsafe nitrate level (greater than 10 mg/l nitrate-nitrogen).

  • Coliform bacteria was present in 16% of the wells tested.

  • Thirty-three percent of the samples tested detected a measurable amount of triazine the most widely used herbicide in WI.

  • Twelve organized drinking water sampling and education programs were conducted in Dodge, Fond du Lac, St. Croix, Taylor, and Calumet Counties.

Teacher Training Using Groundwater Flow Models

In January 2004,  teachers from 24 Wisconsin schools participated in day-long workshops in Spooner, Green Bay and Tomahawk to learn about groundwater and how to use a physical model of groundwater flow in the classroom. This project was funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with wellhead protection funds provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

We are currently planning the groundwater flow model teacher workshops for 2005.  More details will be posted as they become available.
