Annual Private Well Water Quality ReportIn 2001, 2,797 private well water samples were tested at the UWSP Environmental Task Force Lab (now Water and Environmental Analysis Lab) and entered into the Center's data base. One in nine of those contained an unsafe nitrate level, and one in six contained coliform bacteria. Thirty-three percent of private well samples tested for triazine contained a measurable amount of these herbicides (weed killers). Twelve organized drinking water sampling and education programs were conducted in Adams, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Iowa, Sheboygan, St. Croix, Taylor, and Vilas Counties.Teacher Training Using Groundwater Flow ModelsIn January 2004, teachers from 24 Wisconsin schools will participate in day-long workshops in Spooner, Green Bay and Tomahawk to learn about groundwater and how to use a physical model of groundwater flow in the classroom. This project was funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with wellhead protection funds provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
