Dr.
Yongping Yang
Deputy Director
Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming Institute of
Botany
Kunming, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China
A renowned scientist from the worlds most populated nation describes efforts of the Chinese Academic of Science Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) and its Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge (CBIK) to help local indigenous communities in China find ways to preserve their cultural traditions and local biodiversity while supporting sustainable development and livelihoods. Yunnan Province in southern China, home of Shangri-La and Marco Polos silk road, is a global biodiversity hot spot with lowland subtropical forests to alpine ecosystems including the worlds center of diversity for tea and bamboo species, among others. With over half of all of Chinas ethnic minorities, Yunnan Province also features Chinas greatest cultural diversity. Deputy
Director of KIB and CBIK board member, Dr. Yang will discuss case
studies such as Sangpabawa, a traditional rattan
reserve managed
by the Aka people in South Yunnan Province, that uses a sustainable
terraced approach to managing the land: a forest reserve at the top of
watershed; village residences in the middle; paddy field in the lowland.
