
Huabin Hu

Huabin Hu, a professor and research fellow at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) , has extensively researched and written about the ethnoecological knowledge of indigenous peoples in China. He has participated in several research projects addressing sustainable mountain agriculture, agricultural extension strategies, indigenous knowledge of ethnic home-gardens, and environmental conservation.
Hu has worked as a research assistant in Yunnan Institute of Tropical Botany (YITB), CAS, which was based in Menglun, Xishuangbanna, where he participated in the survey of plant resources in the tropical forests of Xishuangbanna nature reserve.
As a research fellow in Kunming Institute of Ecology (KIE), CAS, Hu worked on projects on land use planning and the study of the tropical forest ecosystems of Xishuangbanna, and headed a seven-year project on "Integrated rural development of impoverished karst area in Yunnan province" under the Yunnan Upland Management (YUM) Program, which is supported by the Ford Foundation.
At the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, CAS, Hu led research teams to carry out studies on "Community forest management and its implication on biodiversity conservation" and "Land use dynamics of Xishuangbanna using GIS.”
Hu’s recent publications include the “Preliminary Study on the Ethnoecological knowledge and sustainable mountain resource management of Jingpo People,” “Ethnoecological Knowledge and Biodiversity Conservation in Western China,” and (as coauthor) “Biodiversity Management and Sustainable Development: Lancang-Mekong River in the New Millennium.”
His work has won several awards from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including a First Prize for work as a participant in the project on “The study and Extension of Man-made Rubber-Tea Community.”
