Dr. Antonio Bueno Lazo is one of South America�s leading experts in community-based sustainability and ecosystem management. He is director of the Center for Construction with Earth and Sustainable Development (Centro de Estudios para la Edificaci�n con Tierra y el Desarrollo Sostenible (CEETyDeS) based in Lima, Peru.

Picture (288x204, 22.8Kb)Much of Dr. Bueno Lazo�s recent work has centered on preserving the cultural and ecological integrity of the highland Andean village of Ccachupata near Cusco, Peru. The village lies in the heart of the ancient Inca world near the renowned ruin site of Machu Picchu, and not far from Manu National Park, a biologically diverse part of Amazonian Peru.

Dr. Bueno Lazo will describe efforts to enhance Ccachupata�s ability to become more economically selfsufficient while sustaining the ecological integrity of the surrounding land and the cultural integrity and history of the local people. The Community�s projects include: developing appropriate technology for irrigation systems from springs and available rainwater; aquaculture (trout production); innovative composters; building durable adobe housing; designing greenhouses for passive solar home heating and vegetable production; reforestation; growing organic produce; developing �living fences� from plants that yield useful products such as edible fruit.

In addition to his duties as director of CEETyDeS, Dr. Bueno Lazo is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the National University of Cusco (UNSAAC), Peru. He is currently involved in partnership activities with UWSP�s GEM Education Center, including learning experiences for students in various projects at Ccachupata through the GEM Student Ambassador Program.
