Undergraduate
NRES 250 - Introduction to Forestry Fisheries and Wildlife (lab
Instructor)
This course will introduce students to management practices used to
achieve specific objectives using the fisheries, forestry and wildlife
resources. Through
laboratory experiences, students will observe examples of management and
develop basic hands-on skills relative to measuring and assessing these
resources.
Forestry 499 - Private Forest Management (Instructor)
Non-industrial private forest landowners own 59 percent of America
woodlands and 57 percent of Wisconsin’s woodlands. They account for a
majority of the wood
that is harvested which supply America’s forest products industry. This
course is designed to introduce students to the skills necessary for
agency,
industry, and private enterprise foresters to work with family forest
landowners.
To place this information into context students will develop a forest
stewardship plan that meets the criteria for the Wisconsin Department of
Natural
Resource’s Managed Forest Law Program. As a part of this process you
will learn about interpersonal communications skills, the Wisconsin
Department of
Natural Resources Cooperating Forester Program; Managed Forest Law
Program; Wisconsin Forest Landowner Grant Program; and Certified Plan
Writer
certification.
Continuing Education
Wisconsin's Woodland
Leadership Institute
Wisconsin's Woodland Leadership Institute is designed to educate and
equip woodland owners to become leaders in their local communities on
issues related to
forestry, sustainable forest management, and public policy and to help
them become active in these issues at the local, regional, and statewide
levels.
The coursework focuses on the history and development of forestry and
its impact on Wisconsin's social, ecologic and economic health; current
forest
management issues and philosophy; the role of woodland owner
organizations in Wisconsin; as well as the introduction of community
outreach and public
participation techniques.
Graduates of the Woodland Leadership Institute are expected to play an
active role as leaders in woodland landowner organizations and to impact
forest
management by woodland owners through peer-to-peer contact and planned
activities in their local community.
Wisconsin's Master Woodland
Steward Program
Wisconsin's Master Woodland Steward Program is for woodland owners
interested in learning more about their woodlands and sustainable forest
management
practices. The Master Woodland Steward Program combines classroom
instruction and outdoor experiences to teach participants the basics of
forest ecology,
silviculture, forest management techniques, managing for wildlife
habitat, business decision and planning tools, sources of technical and
financial assistance as well as community outreach techniques.
Participants in the Master Woodland Steward Program receive more than 30
hours of instruction from UW-Extension and Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resource
forestry and woodland management specialists. They also receive
reference materials full of practical woodland and wildlife management
tips. The program
provides participants with a chance to meet other woodland owners and
share ideas and information about management strategies in a fun and
educational
setting. As a graduate of the program you will have the opportunity to
help other woodland owners understand and apply good stewardship
practices to their
forests.
Research Interest
