Then imagine a fierce storm in the area.

In an instant a windstorm can reshape an entire forest.  Windstorms are natural occurrences that quickly change the structure of a forest.  Here is an example of what one storm did to a pine plantation in Central Wisconsin in the summer of 2001.  These pictures and observations were taken 2 miles south of Waupaca, WisconsinClick on a picture for a larger view.
Pine plantation from far From a distance I was drawn to stop and investigate.

Just outside the plantation I began to realized the power of the storm.
Hanging tree top Tree tops were sheared off.
Tree trunks Tree trunks remained upright but the tree tops were scattered around my feet.
Tree trunks The tree trunks looked like a sea of toothpicks stuck in the ground.

The power of nature was very apparent in this forest.

After the storm a logging crew went to the plantation and salvaged the trees the trees that had been knocked down.  Now the land can be replanted with new trees.
