During the summer of 1997, a 5% systematic survey was conducted on the Sternberg Forest to survey the forest and groundcover layers. The results of the groundcover survey showed a wide variety of species present. Even after the recent disturbance of the thinning cuts, the groundcover layer was filled with beautiful color and diversity.

In the forested area of the property, the predominant species of groundcover included Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), wood violet (Viola latiuscula), bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) and various species of grasses (Carex spp.) The wetland area of the property was primarily willow (Salix spp.), swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), alder (Alder regosa) and various species of grasses (Carex spp.).

The Forest contained some very interesting plants, including the larger purple fringed orchid (Habenaria fimbritata), the poisionous water hemlock (Cicuta maculata) and Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema atrorubens).
