The E.S. and Catherine McLoud Memorial Forest is an 80-acre parcel that is located in a glacial outwash plain in southeastern Portage County, in an area that is predominantly agricultural fields. The Carrie Frost School Forest is located to the north and northeast of the McLoud Forest. These two forests are very evident as you view the regional air photos.
Prior to planting the area into red pine (Pinus resinosa) and white pine (Pinus strobus) in the 1950's, the property was planted in oats and corn. The forest planting stock was purchased from the Griffith Nursery between 1950 - 1953. In 1978 and 1988, thinning cuts were conducted on the Forest, removing 725 and 850 cords, respectively. The Forest is scheduled to be thinned again in 1999. During the fall of 1996, a 5% systematic survey was conducted on the McLoud Forest to survey the forest and groundcover layers. Overall, the Forest averages 27 cords and 840 board feet per acre**, with an average dbh (diameter at breast height = 4.5' above the ground) of 9.2". (**data from a 1992 appraisal of the Forest by Steigerwaldt Land Services, Inc.)
The southwestern 5 acres is a native oak woodlot that has never been farmed. This stand contains red oak (Quercus rubra), white oak (Q. alba), pin oak (Q. palustris) and bur oak (Q. macrocarpa). The average dbh of this area is 12.8", with several 20" - 26" trees recorded. The only management on this parcel was removal of gooseberry (Ribes spp.), to prevent the spread of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) throughout the plantation. A prescribed burn is scheduled in 1998-99.
