Allen's
Acres - NE 1/4 of Sec 24, T20N, R4E,
Juneau County, WI.
Allen's
Acres is a 116 acre forest that is located
approximately 40 miles southwest of the UWSP
campus. This property was donated to the
Foundation by Ellen M. Allen in 1990.
Aproximately one half of the property was planted
into a pine plantation in 1974-75, with the
remainder in a naturally regenerated young oak
forest. It has special research potential as an
oak forest and recently became part of a regional
study of oak ecosystems. Groundwater studies and
wildlife investigations have been conducted on
the property.
Bill
Natzke Forest - SW 1/4 of Sec 3,
T33N, R4E, Lincoln County, WI.
This
160 acre property was given to the Foundation for
use by the CNR as a wildlife refuge. It is
located in Lincoln County, 50 miles north of UWSP
and 25 miles southwest of Treehaven. Among other
attributes, it contains one of the higher quality
trout rivers in north-central Wisconsin. It is
within the territory of one of Wisconsin's timber
wolf packs. The property is currently under
Managed Forest Law. It is used primarily for
forestry and wildlife research.
Buena Vista
Marsh - SW 1/4 of Sec 25,
T22N, R7E,
Portage County, WI.
The
Buena Vista property, 10 miles from campus, is a
5 acre parcel containing a house and associated
outbuildings that was given to the Foundation to
support wildlife research. The barn is used for
storage of wildlife research equipment and the
house accommodates students doing research in the
Buena Vista prairie chicken area.
Central
Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES)-
Parts of Sec 22 & 15, T24N, R10E, Portage
County, WI.
CWES
serves as the laboratory for our environmental
education /interpretation program. Over 20,000
school children and adults annually participate
in programs offerred and conducted by UWSP
college students under the guidance of our
faculty. The 163+ acre property is located on
beautiful Sunset Lake, 18 miles east of UWSP.
Facilities include a dining and meeting hall,
dormitory style lodge, 5 Scandanavian style log
cabins plus several other buildings. The trustees
of Camp Chickagamie and the North New Hope
Lutheran Church lease the property to the
Foundation. The 80 acre Severson Lake property is
located near CWES, allowing for additional land
to expore and study.
Dudley
Lake - NW 1/4 of Sec 22, T34N, R8E,
Lincoln County, WI.
The
Dudley Lake property is a 7.5 acre parcel with
200' of frontage on Dudley Lake, the second
deepest lake in Wisconsin. It was given to the
Foundation by Joan Weinkauf in 1985.
Kurtz
Memorial Forest - NE 1/4 of SE 1/4
and 30 acres of SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Sec 36, T17N,
R6E, Adams County, WI.
This 70 acre forest is located in Adams
County, 50 miles south of UWSP. This forest
contains a 45 year old, well maintained red pine
plantation as well as an oak forest.
Kohler/Bushman
Forest - NE 1/4 of Sec 11. T21N,
R6E,
Chippewa County, WI.
This
160 acre forest in Chippewa County is 100 miles
west of UWSP. It contains an excellent example of
of a northern hardwood forest. It was cut over in
1985, shortly before if was given to the
Foundation, but has regenerated with a good stand
of hardwoods. It is available for forestry and
wildlife research.
McDonald
Island - Parts of Sec 5
& 6, T23N, R8E,
Portage County, WI.
This
54 acre island is located in the Wisconsin River
within the city limits of Stevens Point and is
accessible only by boat. The Island was donated
to the College in 1969 by Robert S. and Louise K.
McDonald. Approximately 20 acres at the center of
the Island were farmed until the 1950's. At that
time the area was planted into a red pine
plantation. The remaining 34 acres are a
beautiful, old-growth hardwood forest. There is a
wide diversity of wildlife and groundcover
species found on the Island. The high population
of whitetail deer on the Island has interfered
with tree regeneration on the south side of the
Island. Several CNR classes and research projects
are being conducted on McDonald Island.
E.S. and
Katherine McLoud Memorial Forest - NE 1/4 of Sec 18,
T21N, R9E, Portage County, WI.
The
McLoud Forest was donated to the College in 1992
by E.S. and Catherine McLoud. The property is
located in Portage County, 20 miles south of the
UWSP campus. Currently, the
80 acre parcel contains a well maintained road
system that winds through approximately 70 acres
of a red pine and white pine plantation. The
southwest five acres of the Forest is a native
oak savannah that was never farmed. Several CNR
classes use the McLoud Forest as a field
laboratory.
Schmeeckle
Reserve - NW 1/4 of Sec 25,
T22N, R8E,
Portage County, WI.
The
Schmeeckle Reserve is a 275 acre property on the
northern part of the UWPS campus. The Reserve
contains several forest types, wetland areas and
Joanis Lake, which are all extensively used by
students from the CNR for courses and research.
Well maintained trails are found throught the
Reserve, including a portion of the Green Circle
Trail. The Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center
provides visitors with information on the
Reserve, houses the Wisconsin Conservation Hall
of Fame museum and gallery, a meeting room, and a
natural history sales area, the Browse Shoppe.
Severson
Lake - NE 1/4 of Sec 23, T24N, R10E,
Portage County, WI.
The
Severson Lake property is 80 acres of beautiful
forest located near the Central Wisconsin
Environmental Station (CWES), 18 miles east of
Stevens Point. It is used as a field laboratory
by CNR students and as an outdoor environmental
education area for over 20,000 school age
children and adults.
Sternberg
Forest - N 1/2 of SW 1/4
and NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Sec 12, T27N, R7E,
Marathon County, WI.
The
Sternberg Forest was donated to the Foundation in
1992 by Lawerence and Jane Sternberg. The
property is 20 miles north of the UWSP campus in
Marathon County. The original donation included
122 acres of forested land, a cottage and 3
outbuildings. The northern 38 acre parcel was
sold in 1999 to Norm and Linda Knauf. The
cottage, outbuildings and 4 acres of land were
sold in 1995 to Don and Sue Kissinger. The
remaining 80 acres include a beautiful hardwood
forest, wetland area and Bull Jr. Creek. Several
CNR courses use the forested and wetland areas
for a field laboratory.
Treehaven - Sec 24, 25, 26 &
36, T35N, R7E, Lincoln County, WI.
The 1200
acre Treehaven Field Station, located 75 miles
north of UWSP, is the core of the property that
supports the teaching and research mission of the
CNR. It is used extensively for education as part
of the required summer camp program for students
majoring in natural resources. This beautiful
property contains a wide variety of forest cover
types and wetland habitats. Facilities at the
field station include a dining hall, 2 dormatory
style lodges, several cabins and a classroom
center. The property was donated to the
Foundation by Dorothy and Jacque Vallier in 1979.
