2008 Wisconsin Solar Tour

The Wisconsin Solar Tour of Homes and Businesses is coordinated by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (www.the-mrea.org) each year. This tour not only showcases homes and businesses that use solar energy, it also highlights other renewable energy technologies such as wind, geothermal, biomass, and the benefits of energy efficiency.

Eight teachers received funding from We Energies this year to attend the Solar Tour. After participating in the Tour and completing a Photo Journal, We Energies offered funding for Technology and Engineering Instructors in their electric service territory for energy education resources.

The following teachers were awarded the funding. Please click on their names to view their completed Photo Journals documenting their Solar Tour experiences.

Events

Each year, KEEP sends technology education teachers from eligible schools to premier energy-related training events across the state. KEEP will pay for your registration, travel, and substitute reimbursement.

Check back in Fall 2009 to apply!

Please note: Eligible schools are those that purchase their electricity from a participating electric utility company within the Focus on Energy territory. To check your school's eligibility, go to www.focusonenergy.com and click on the eligibility tool at the top of the page or contact Sara Windjue at 715.346.4163 or swindjue@uwsp.edu.

Renewable Energy Fair

Picture (1500x564, 68.6Kb)The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) will be hosting The 20th Annual Energy Fair on June 19-21, 2009.

KEEP will be offering a graduate course at the Fair specifically for technology education instructors - NRES 731. If you need a credit and are interested in learning more about renewable energy and/or sustainable living, you should attend the Fair.

Visit our Professional Development page to download the registration form (available in spring 2009)!

To learn more about the Fair, visit www.the-mrea.org.

Technology Guest Speakers

One of the strongest additions to a technology education classroom can be an energetic guest speaker. Have you considered inviting in an engineer from Toyota to speak to your automotive students about the Toyota Prius and hybrid technologies? What about bringing in a local contractor to share worksite anecdotes with your building trades class? KEEP wants to help you provide these additional learning experiences for your students.

Visit our field trip & guest speaker database to find out what is available in your area. Also, contact KEEP to find out about funds to cover the cost of bringing a speaker to your school.

Graduate Courses

At KEEP, technology education teachers are a priority. We can tailor any of our regular graduate credit courses to meet the needs of technology educators. Find out more about the roster of KEEP graduate credit opportunities by clicking here. Contact Sara Windjue at 715.346.4163 if you would like to schedule a course specifically for technology education instructors.

Conferences

Every year, KEEP sponsors 3 teachers to attend the annual Better Buildings: Better Business conference, which is held in the Wisconsin Dells. This first-rate learning, networking, and business development opportunity is a wonderful way to learn about energy efficient building practices and get to know the experts in the field. Below are comments from past participants:

"Thanks for the opportunity to go to such an awesome conference. I learned so much and am very excited to share with both my students and local skilled trade's people."

"I thought it was the most beneficial conference I have ever been to. Most of the conferences that I can attend deal with teaching strategies, etc., but because I teach home construction, this conference taught me hard core building techniques [related to] moisture control, ventilation and framing, all of which I can pass directly on to my students and they can use after graduation in their careers in construction."

"I have taught my students more about high performance houses in the two days since I have been back from the conference than I have in the last two years. Great conference. Thanks to KEEP I had to opportunity to attend."

2010 Conference: March 3-5
2011 Conference: March 2-4

If you would like to be notified of scholarships for next year's conference, please contact Sara Windjue at swindjue@uwsp.edu.

Teaching Resources and Activities

Here is a list of activities found in the KEEP Activity Guide and Doable Renewables Activity Guide specifically for the technology education classroom. If you're interested in obtaining the full activity, please register for NR 730 and/or NR 732 (see the Professional Development page for scheduled courses).

Do you have a watt meter in your classroom? What about a Pedal Power Energy Bike? KEEP has an extensive collection of teaching resources that you can use to make energy education come alive for your students. Visit our Resources Page to find out more.

Or download a list of technology education related resources that you may find useful for your classroom.

The Focus on Energy Business Program has a Tool Lending Library that has many teaching resources available to check out for a period of 28 days or less. These tools include a Data Logger/Monitor, Infrared Thermometer, and Watt Meters. These resources are only available to schools who participate in the Focus on Energy public benefits program. To request equipment, please contact your Focus Energy Advisor. If you aren't sure who your Energy Advisor is, ask your school's facilities or maintenance personnel. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sara at 715.346.4163.
