Student Success Center Hours
Sue's walk-in hours will be Wed. from 10-11:30pm. The CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180) is open Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30pm.

!Freshman and Sophomores
Peer advising has begun. Come in soon so you can get ready to register for classes next semester. A sign up sheet will be available outside of the CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180).

New Majors
New majors in Resource Management: Law Enforcement and Resource Management: Policy are now available. Stop by CNR 180 to add these majors or to pick up the planning sheets.

!European Seminar Informational Meeting
The informational meeting for the 2008 European Environmental Studies Seminar to Poland, Iceland and Germany will be held on Mon, Oct. 22 at 5pm in CNR 120. The application for this program will be on-line after the meeting.

!GIS Pre-registration
If you plan on taking a GIS class next semester (Geography 279 or 476) you must pre-register with the geography department. The dates for pre-registration are Oct. 22-Nov. 1. You may pre-register at the Geography/Geology Department office, Science D332.

To continue getting Wisconsin's share of the federal excise tax you pay when you buy hunting and fishing equipment, DNR needs to update its Fish, Wildlife and Habitat Management Plan for 2007-2013. European Seminar Informational Meeting

These trips are a great opportunity to grow personally, explore and experience the breathtaking biodiversity of these hospitable countries. There are now International Program Scholarship Endowment scholarships available for Semester II, 2007-08 and Spring Break 2008 study abroad programs. The application for the IPSE Scholarships are available on the International Programs home page at www.uwsp.edu/studyabroad Alternatively, they can be picked up in the IP Office. NOTES: Knowledge of Japanese is NOT a requirement and this is a very INEXPENSIVE program!

American Water Resources Association (AWRA)

The Wildlife Society NEW
Thanks to Michele Windsor for speaking at our last meeting! Next week the meeting will be back in CNR 170 and biologist Laine Stowell will be speaking about the elk population in the state of Wisconsin. It should be interesting so come check it out! Also, save your wild game as we will be having a game dinner Dec. 5th at Mead Wildlife Area! Meetings are on Tuesdays at 5pm in CNR 170.

Herpetology Society Meetings

Meetings are
Mondays at 6PM in CNR 354. If you have a passion for Reptiles and Amphibians this is the place to be! Come and learn hands on care, handling, identifying and interesting facts about native and non-native herpetiles. The Herpetology Society has many speakers and field trips planned so come and join the fun.

Women in Natural Resources (WiNR)
Sat, Oct. 20, 8am-5pm, Volunteer work trip to the Northwood's Wildlife Center in Minocqua, WI. This will be the 28th semester in a row that WiNR has volunteered at Northwood's--plan on being part of the tradition!  Sign up at apple picking or e-mail Kelly VanBeek, kvanb281@uwsp.edu to sign up as well.

UWSP Fire Crew
We are a student organization focused on wildland fire fighting. If you are interested in becoming a member, or you would like to learn more about us, please join us at one of our meetings or stop by our office. Fire Crew meetings are held weekly on Thursday evenings at 6pm in CNR 170, and our office is located in CNR 361A.


Student Law Enforcement Association (SLEA) NEW
We will be meeting on Mon, Oct. 22 at 6pm in CNR 170. We have a number of exciting events coming up such as our Fall Trip in Tomahawk, Snowmobile Safety Education, our Fall Trap Shoot, and the preparations for the 2008 SLEA Ice Fishing Derby. Resume Workshops
Fall resume workshops have been scheduled for the following dates and times. Workshops are open to all CNR and science majors and are free of charge. Here are the workshop sessions:

Workshops will be held in CNR 120 from 7 to 9 PM. All sessions are identical in content, so students need to attend only one program. Signup is NOT required. Make sure that you do not miss these outstanding opportunities.

CNR T-shirt Design Contest
CNR shirts need a new design! If you are artistic and interested in winning $50, create your own design! All shirts must have UWSP, CNR, and College of Natural Resources written on them, and always have the majors listed on the back. Other than that, the sky is the limit! Designs must be done by Oct. 26 and turned in to CNR 180.

CNR Undergraduate Research Symposium Open House
Are you Curious about undergraduate research?  Are you wondering about the finances, who to go to, where to get started, and what it will do for you?  Well on Mon, Oct. 22, 2007 at 6pm, at room 320 CNR building, the SRS committee will be having an open house to explain and answer all your questions.  Please show and find out how you can be apart of this years CNR Undergraduate Student Research Symposium.  There will be FREE PIZZA also!!!  Come and enjoy the fun of undergraduate research! 

SCA Conservation in Action Multimedia Contest
The SCA is having a contest for creative, environmentally aware students to help raise awareness about environmental issues. Entries can be submitted in the form of a research project, thesis, video, website, or other multimedia project. For more information click on the title to view the website.

Midwest Environmental Education Conference (MEEC)

Anyone hunting doves at Buena Vista
If you are willing to let your kill be sampled for trichomoniasis please contact Kristina Artner at kartn508@uwsp.edu. The sample is a simple oral swab taken within 2 days of the kill. Thanks.

2007 Fall Candlelight Hike: Going Batty at Schmeeckle Reserve
The Candlelight Hike will feature a one-mile torch-lit trail through Schmeeckle Reserve on Fri, Oct. 26 from 6:30-9:30pm. Eat like a bat if you dare! Make your very own bat puppet and paint a pumpkin for your doorstep while you're at it. We will also be offering a new program this year, “Bats of Schmeeckle” that will be put on by the students of the Environmental Education/Interpretation practicum. The bats of central Wisconsin will come to life as they share their stories of survival. Discover where our bats live, what they eat and how they hunt. `Also learn about the new bat monitoring station in Schmeeckle reserve and see how researchers monitor bats by recording their sounds. 

CNR Fall Migration Banquet
CNR students are encouraged to invite their parents to the annual CNR Fall Migration banquet to benefit the CNR Endowment Fund. The event will be at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at 5pm. Cash Bar, Dinner, Silent Auction, Live Auction, Raffles, and more. Great fun, and a great cause!  Tickets: $60/person.  Registration deadline:  Oct. 19th. Printable registration forms at http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr/migration/. The Daniel O. Trainer Building dedication ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on the same day in the CNR building west lobby.

Treehaven Classes and Workshops


GPS/GIS-Global Positioning Systems & Geographic Information Systems
This is an introductory workshop with hands-on exercises. Learn how these fascinating new technologies are reshaping our world and creating new paradigms of understanding. With this computer based technology, you will find applications for almost anyone interested in natural resources. Equipment will be used outside part of the time. No previous experience is necessary. Attention UWSP Students:

Group Process and Facilitation Skills
Learn and practice group process and facilitation skills that can be used to develop highly effective teams that produce high quality results. Wolf Ecology Workshops

The CNR undergraduate scholarship application will be available from October 1 - 31 on the Student Success Website -

Allow for approximately 1 hour to complete the application.  Also, please be VERY PROFESSIONAL on your application, as the information will be forwarded to the scholarship donors for their approval - typographical or grammatical errors and sloppy workmanship will prevent you from receiving favorable consideration from the donors. 
December 2007 graduates are not eligible for CNR scholarships
Graduate students - this scholarship application is for undergraduate students only.  Any CNR scholarships that are intended for graduate students will be chosen by the discipline in which the scholarship is housed. 

Wisconsin Association of Professional Agricultural Consultants (WAPAC) Scholarship
WAPAC is offering a $1,500 scholarship to students who have recently completed a summer internship in an agriculture production field. Please stop by the CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180) for more information and to pick up an application.
