Student Success Center Hours
Sue will be gone Tues, Wed, and Thurs on a recruitment trip but will have walk-in hours on Mon. and Fri. from 10-11:30am. The CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180) is open Mon.-Thurs. 8-4:30pm and Fri. 8-3.

Peer advising has begun. Come in soon so you can get ready to register for classes next semester. A sign up sheet will be available outside of the CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180). Please sign your name legibly so that we can read it.

New majors in Resource Management: Law Enforcement and Resource Management: Policy are now available. Stop by CNR 180 to add these majors or to pick up the planning sheets.

Physics 201!
There have been four new sections of Physics 201 added to the Spring 2008 timetable.

Environmental Toxicology Lab - WATR 496/696
Will be offered Spring 2008 Tuesdays 2:00-4:30. This 2-credit course is offered only in even years. Students will learn how to perform biological assays that can be used to determine the presence of harmful substances in water or soil.  These techniques have diverse practical applications for K-12 science teachers, Peace Corp volunteers as well as water resource professionals.  Class size is limited. No prerequisites. Contact Ron Crunkilton for additional information.
  
*Water 496 will be offered, but Water 494 will not be offered. It is only offered in odd years.

Forestry 499 - Are you interested in working with non-industrial private forest landowners?
Non-industrial private forest landowners own 59 percent of America's woodlands and 57 percent of Wisconsin's woodlands. They account for a majority of the wood that is harvested which supply America's forest products industry. Forestry 499 (Section 2) Private Forest Management is designed to introduce students to the skills necessary for agency, industry, and private consultant foresters to work with and develop forest stewardship management plans for these family forest landowners. This course will provide you with an introduction to Wisconsin's Managed Forest Law and Certified Plan Writer curriculum as well as the profession of consulting forestry in Wisconsin.

Forestry 499 (Section 2) Private Forest Management will be offered this coming spring semester. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have about this course or your advisor to see how it fits into your degree program.


CNR T-Shirt Sales NEW
Come check out the new design! We will be taking orders for the CNR t-shirts this week from Oct. 29 – Nov. 2. The Parks and Recreation Association will be taking orders for the CNR t-shirts in the west end of the CNR lobby from approximately 9-4 Mon.- Friday. Scheduling may vary due to class schedules. Payments are required at the time of order placement.  Cash or check payments are acceptable.

So is the 2nd Annual CNR International Photo contest! Yee haa!!!
Dust off that perfect international photo and enter it in the annual contest for CNR students and faculty. This year, we are requesting hard copy 5x7 submissions for display in the CNR Lobby. Students and faculty will judge. Prizes available. Photo entry due November 14th - during International Education Week. Two Categories: 1. Environment and Nature, 2. Ghana, West Africa: Sustainable Forestry in Tropical Ecosystems - Summer 2008 NEW
Northern Arizona University and University of Wisconsin -Stevens Point are offering a 3-week (3- credit) field course in sustainable forest management practices for tropical ecosystems in Ghana, West Africa. The course is taught in cooperation with local educators and research colleagues and includes time in both dry- and wet-tropical forest ecosystems. Environmental Educators and Naturalists Association (EENA/NAI)
Get ready for the EENA bake sale on Nov. 14. We'll have plenty of great food to go around. There will be no meeting this week because of the NAI National Workshop. Our next meeting will be Tues. Nov. 13.

The Wildlife Society
Thank you to last week's speaker Laine Stowell who talked about Wisconsin's elk herd and thank you to this week's speaker Ginamaria Javurek who spoke about her interpretation position at Lake Sakakawea, ND this past summer. At our next meeting this Tuesday Bri Winter will be speaking about her summer position that dealt with post fire effects on woodpeckers. Also, don't forget to save your wild game for the game dinner on Dec. 5th!  Meetings are Tuesday's at 5pm in CNR 170.

Hey CNR Students! EVERY WEEK SGA votes on legislation that directly affects you as students! Let your CNR Senators know how YOU feel and what YOU want. Herpetology Society Meetings

Meetings are
Mondays at 6pm in CNR 354. If you have a passion for Reptiles and Amphibians this is the place to be! Come and learn hands on care, handling, identifying and interesting facts about native and non-native herpetiles. The Herpetology Society has many speakers and field trips planned so come and join the fun.

UWSP Fire Crew
We are a student organization focused on wildland fire fighting. If you are interested in becoming a member, or you would like to learn more about us, please join us at one of our meetings or stop by our office. Fire Crew meetings are held weekly on Thursday evenings at 6pm in CNR 170, and our office is located in CNR 361A.

Women in Natural Resources
Mon, Nov. 12 - 5pm, CNR 320 - 10th Annual WiNR Pot Luck- Bring a dish to pass.  Main dish, beverages and dinnerware provided.  Great chance to meet our awesome female CNR faculty and staff! We will also be speaking about women's health and environmental influences.

Society of Ecological Restoration
If you are interested in assisting the WDNR with habitat restoration/enhancement for priority endangered resources, SER is the organization for you! One of several dates has already been set in November for one of two WDNR sponsored habitat restoration projects dealing primarily with the endangered karner blue butterfly! Student Law Enforcement Association (SLEA)

We will be meeting on Mon, Nov. 5 at 6pm in CNR 170. This is a general meeting and we have a number of things to discuss. We will talk about organizing our Annual Ice Fishing Derby, SLEA Apparel orders, next month’s Board and Officer Elections, the status of our budget, snowmobile safety education, employment opportunities, and we will recap the fall trip. Resume Workshops
Fall resume workshops have been scheduled for the following dates and times. Workshops are open to all CNR and science majors and are free of charge. Here are the workshop sessions:

SCA Conservation in Action Multimedia Contest
The SCA is having a contest for creative, environmentally aware students to help raise awareness about environmental issues. Entries can be submitted in the form of a research project, thesis, video, website, or other multimedia project. For more information click on the title to view the website.

CNR Fall Migration Banquet
CNR students are encouraged to invite their parents to the annual CNR Fall Migration banquet to benefit the CNR Endowment Fund. The event will be at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at 5pm. “Students Making a Difference: Citizen Science Monitoring” is the theme of the 2007 Governor’s High School Conference on the Environment. The event is Wed, Nov. 14, 2007 from 8am until 3:20pm at the Country Springs Hotel. UWSP students and staff are invited to join the high school students and teachers attending this event. Highlights include keynote presentations by Dr. Eric Anderson and Stan Gruszynski, presentations from 20 different citizen-based monitoring programs, and an exhibit hall featuring a careers showcase. GPS/GIS-Global Positioning Systems & Geographic Information Systems
This is an introductory workshop with hands-on exercises. Learn how these fascinating new technologies are reshaping our world and creating new paradigms of understanding. With this computer based technology, you will find applications for almost anyone interested in natural resources. Equipment will be used outside part of the time. No previous experience is necessary. Attention UWSP Students:

Group Process and Facilitation Skills
Learn and practice group process and facilitation skills that can be used to develop highly effective teams that produce high quality results. Wolf Ecology Workshops
Experience shared learning with other wolf enthusiasts while tracking, studying in the classroom and field. You will experience actual tracking and a night time howling survey.

Fly Tying & Trout Stream Entomology
This favorite workshop will introduce you to: basic fly tying techniques, tools and materials, trout stream invertebrates, stream ecology, resource ethics, and theories on hatch matching and fly presentation. You’ll have loads of fun learning to tie common, effective fly patterns for trout at a fraction of the cost!

Are you interested in getting a Commercial Pesticide Applicator ' s License?
NEW
This spring we are offering a course NR 405 (Section 2) Vegetation Management that will help you do just that. This course is a one credit course offered on Mondays from 5-6pm. The course will function both as a tutorial for the Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License exam as well as a general overview course in vegetation management. A Saturday field trip will highlight field application techniques including use of application equipment, application safety and instruction on equipment calibration. The course will finish up with the applicator's exam. A Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License is an awesome addition to a resume.

NR 405 (Section 2) Vegetation Management will be offered this coming spring semester. Please feel free to contact Professors Mike Demchik, John DuPlissis and Les Werner with any questions that you might have about this course or your advisor to see how it fits into your degree program.
