About

Dr. Ellertson received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in Rhetoric and Professional Communication. At Iowa State, Dr. Ellertson served as the lead developer for an ABET-outcomes-aligned eportfolio system for the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) Learning Community. He also developed the first capstone course for teaching multimodal composing for an outcomes aligned eportfolio system at Iowa State. For his work and scholarship, he was nominated by ISU faculty for the Learning Community Innovations Award which he received in 2002. Dr. Ellertson joined the WDMD program in 2005 and teaches: Interaction Design, Rich Internet Application development, 2D and 3D animation, object-oriented programming, game development, distance learning and streaming media applications for the web. Since joining WDMD, Dr. Ellertson and his students have developed multimedia artifacts for an electronic textbook for Bedford St. Martin’s Press and distance learning applications for the City University of London.

Research

Dr. Ellertson has published and presented nationally on multimodal composing, eportfolio development, and curricular assessment using new media. His scholarship on multimodal composing has been recognized in Computers and Composition and included in a foundational anthology for the field. He has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Business Communication and currently serves as an editorial board member of the online journal Kairos.

Currently, he is involved in a series of projects involving serious games for social change, using simulated work environments to teach evolving workflows in Web Development, and using mobile technologies for the creation of learning communities.
