- UWSP
Campus The Writers’ Workshop is designed to recognize and
encourage young writers from area high schools and serve as a
recruitment tool for both the UWSP English department and the campus as
a whole.
Area high school juniors and seniors are invited
to enter writing samples for a chance to qualify for the writer’s
workshop held at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.. Students
submit a writing sample in one of five categories with winners receiving
a scholarship to attend UWSP.
Students
send writing samples in specific categories including formal essays on
an environmental topic or a political topic, familiar essays, children’s
literature, and poetry or fictional short stories. The writing
samples are judged by UWSP faculty members who also will participate in
the workshop sessions. On the day of the workshop, each of the
sample categories will be looked at in depth and discussed with the
qualifying students. Select
students are invited to come to campus based on the strength of their
writing sample(s) and to have their work critiqued by college
professors.
In addition to
the workshop sessions, the event features additional presentations for
students and high school faculty including a keynote address delivered
by a professional writer.
Other activities
during the day include a dance performance and class, and readings by
UWSP students. Two sessions specifically for teachers will be offered as
well. The day closes with an awards ceremony recognizing the
junior writers given an "A" rating and the five senior scholarship
recipients.
