Gilbert Kaczmarek - UWSP
Chemistry Major

College of Letters & Science Testimonial

Gilbert Kaczmarek -  "Dr. Trytten (Chemistry Professor) once emphatically stressed that we always remember Sodium Thiosulfate as a reducing agent.  It wasn't until the Milwaukee Water Dept. had an odor problem in which they called in Carus Chemical Co. (a manufacturer of Potassium Permanganate) to solve it.  I noticed they had no method for determining the proper dose.  Potassium Permanganate is an oxidizing agent and it will react with a reducing agent.  This is when Dr. Trytten's remark resonated in my mind.  I told Carus that their chemical could be titrated with Sodium Thiosulfate.  They tried it, and lo and behold, it worked.

What follows is that Carus notified Wallace and Tiernan (a manufacturer of chemical products), and they developed (by calling in a German engineer), a recorder that automatically analyzes for Potassium Permanganate.  It is commonly used throughout the water works industry today."
