Chapter 2 Learning Goals

 

At the end of this chapter you should feel comfortable with the topics listed below.  You should feel comfortable enough to discuss or answer questions relating to these topics.

 

1.      Be able to balance simple chemical equations.

2.      Know the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures.

3.      Be able to write correct chemical formulas given a chemical name, or correct chemical names, given the correct formula.

4.      Know the names of the important polyatomic ions.

5.      Know what a hydrate is.

6.      Know the difference between kinetic and potential energy.

7.      Describe the Law of conservation of energy.

8.      Know how to use the periodic chart to predict how different atoms will react to form molecules.

9.      Understand basic nomenclature of ionic and molecular compounds.

10.  Understand the difference between ionic and molecular bonding.

11.  Know about transition metals and how they don’t always have just one charge state.

12.  Understand physical properties of ionic and molecular compounds.
