Chapter 1 Learning Goals
At the end of this chapter you should feel comfortable with the topics listed below. You should feel comfortable enough to discuss or answer questions relating to these topics.

Understand the
Scientific Method and the difference between observations, conclusions and laws.
2.
Describe what physical
properties and chemical properties are, including intensive and extensive
properties.
3.
Know the difference
between elements, compounds, and mixtures.
4.
Be able to look at the
periodic table and find the metals, metalloids and nonmetals and also groups
and periods.
5.
Find the alkali
metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, noble gases and transition elements on
the Periodic Chart.
6.
Know what an isotope
is and how to calculate average isotopic mass.
7.
Be able to describe
characteristics of metals and of nonmetals.
8.
Understand the
chemical abbreviations, Atomic numbers and Atomic masses on the Periodic Chart.
