IPEC offered to work with the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) in building a major display at Disney's Epcot Center near Orlando. This initiative is said to be the largest ever undertaken by SPI. An agreement between Disney and SPI to carry out the project was signed January, 2003. Du Pont and General Electric are lead co-sponsors, and a number of other companies will help underwrite costs. Disney plans to open the exhibit in January, 2004. IPEC is participating in planning meetings.
SPI representatives met on March 17 with a team of Disney "Imagineers" to launch the concept phase of the planned plastics showcase at the Innoventions pavilion at Epcot in Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. Convening with the show producer, story writer, art director and others, SPI laid out the messages it wished conveyed in the exhibit and began brainstorming on ways to get key points across. As a next step, SPI and showcase anchors GE Plastics and DuPont will work with Disney to schedule a series of informational visits for the creative team. The SPI plastics showcase is planned to open in January 2004. For more information, contact Bonnie Merrill Limbach, (202) 974-5210; e-mail blimbach@socplas.org.
