Tutoring
"Tutors enable teachers to meet individual needs and learning styles. The students enjoy, as well as connect with the tutors, which leads to better academics, self-concept, and participation. The tutors also show through example how important it is to volunteer in your community."
- Kris Kunkel
Spring semester tutoring starts the week of February 18 and runs until the week of April 25th.
The SIEO tutoring program is a semester-long commitment, and because of this, tutors get a chance to truly connect with the tutee and teachers with whom they work. Tutors are introduced to a leadership role in which they serve as both a behavioral and academic model; they can also become a positive aspect of the tutee's life and someone on whom the tutee can rely.
"I think that volunteering in the classroom is just as important as university courses for education majors. Volunteering in classrooms gave me the opportunity to see teaching philosophies and methods in practice rather than simply reading about them. It also exposed me to many different teaching styles and, most importantly, gave me additional experience in working with students in a classroom setting."
- Staci Mitchell
Not only do tutors gain experience in a professional setting, they also make connections within the community and in their field of study. The relationships most tutors develop with their tutees and teachers often give them a sense of being needed and of accomplishment. Tutors get to experience firsthand another level of the learning process; they get a chance to develop, improve and reinforce their own study habits, as well as improve their understanding of many concepts involved with teaching.
Education majors and non-education majors alike are encouraged to participate in the program. Having previous tutoring experience is not necessary, but experienced tutors are always sought after.
