Students: Nominate Mentors
Nominated Mentors: Answer Questionnaire
The Mentor Award was established at the same time as the Student University Leadership Award in 1979. This award honors faculty/staff for the work they do with students involved outside the classroom. The involvement network categories utilized are the same as those for the Student Leadership Awards. Those include: Residence Halls, Student Organizations, Multi-Cultural Involvement, Athletics and the Arts.
Any faculty/staff member who works with a recognized group of students, or a specific work group may be nominated by any member of the University Community. The criteria for those selected are those who best provide outstanding assistance, help students develop personally and professionally, model outstanding personal characteristics and effectiveness, freely give more than might be expected, and show care and concern for those students with which they work. Typically, about 10 advisors, directors, supervisors, coaches, etc. are honored annually.
Nomination forms provide space for statements of support, and nominees are asked to submit a brief questionnaire. These two documents form the basis for evaluation. The committee that selects the Student University Leadership Award recipients also makes decisions on the Mentor Awards by evaluating their written material against the criteria.
The first three times an individual wins a Mentor Award, they receive an inscribed gavel similar to the student award. If the individual is recognized again, they receive a purple and gold plaque for "ongoing contributions to student development at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point." Mentor award winners are also acknowledged in the program at Convocation.
The call for nominations is made by the end of February. The committee makes its decisions by the end of March and announcements are made by mid-April. The awards are presented at the Spring Leadership Awards ceremony which is held just before final examinations in the Spring.
