What will we be doing?

Participants will be spending spring break volunteering with Camp Restore in New Orleans to work to restore the city after Hurricane Katrina. The purpose of this trip is to give participants an introduction to disaster relief programs such as construction, survivor stories, and community rejuvenation, as well as giving them a chance to make a difference in the lives of others.

We will be volunteering approximately 30 - 35 hours during the week with free time at night to explore the city or spend time with other volunteers. Participants will volunteer in multiple different areas, such as construction or working with youth.

How much does it cost?

The cost of ASB New Orleans is $400.00 spread over two payments. The trip cost covers your transportation to and from New Orleans, housing, breakfast and lunch, transportation within New Orleans, and training and activities by SIEO.

The trip cost does not cover dinners, meals on travel days (March 23rd and 29th), souvenirs, medical insurance, and entertainment while in New Orleans. The group has the option of doing group fundraising which can offset the cost of out-of-pocket dinners.

How can I find out more information?

Please contact Caitlin Lindsay, SIEO Service Trip Coordinator, at sieotrip@uwsp.edu or 715-346-2174.

How do I sign up?

To sign up for ASB New Orleans, please fill out the application packet and turn it in along with a check deposit of $100 (made out to UWSP) to the Information and Tickets Office no later than September 26, 2012. Selection criteria are outlined in the application packet.

A committee of students and staff will review the applications. Participants will be notified by October 19th on whether or not they have been selected.

If you are selected, the remaining balance of $300 of the balance will be due to Information and Tickets by December 14th.

If you are not selected to participate, your $100.00 deposit will be returned in full.

If you have questions about the selection process, please contact Caitlin Lindsay at sieotrip@uwsp.edu.

What is the purpose of the pre-trip meetings?

The purposes of the meetings are three-fold:

  • Get to know the other participants before you spend a week together.
  • Explore the root causes of social issues.
  • Prepare for the service trip.

If the group chooses to fundraise to offset out-of-pocket expenses (such as dinners) the meetings will also be used to plan fundraisers.
