Alternative Spring Break

Location information coming soon / March 14-March 22, 2015

We are working on planning some amazing trips. Please check back for more information about spring break 2015.

What will we be doing?

Participants will be spending spring break volunteering with Youth Service Opportunities Project in New York to gain awareness about poverty as well as provide hands-on assistance with issues relating to poverty. The purpose of this trip is to give participants an introduction to poverty through programs such as soup kitchens, stories from homeless individuals, and activities, as well as giving participants a chance to make a difference in the lives of others.

We will be volunteering approximately 30 - 35 hours during the week with free time at night to explore the city or spend time with other volunteers. Participants will volunteer in multiple different areas, such as shelters or soup kitchens.

How much does it cost?

The cost of ASB New York is $450.00 spread over two payments. The trip cost covers your transportation to and from New York, housing, breakfast and lunch, some dinners, transportation within New York, and training and activities by SIEO.

The trip cost does not cover dinners, meals on travel days (March 16th and 21st), souvenirs, medical insurance, and entertainment while in New York. The group has the option of doing group fundraising which can offset the cost of out-of-pocket dinners.

How can I find out more information?

How do I sign up?

To sign up for ASB New York, please fill out the application packet and turn it in along with a check deposit of $100 (made out to UWSP) to the Information and Tickets Office no later than September 25, 2013. Selection criteria are outlined in the application packet.

A committee of students and staff will review the applications. Participants will be notified by October 18th on whether or not they have been selected.

If you are selected, the remaining balance of $350 will be due to Information and Tickets by December 13th.

If you are not selected to participate, your $100.00 deposit will be returned in full.

If you have questions about the selection process, please contact the SIEO Service Trip Coordinator at sieotrip@uwsp.edu.

What is the purpose of the pre-trip meetings?

The purposes of the meetings are three-fold:

  • Get to know the other participants before you spend a week together.
  • Explore the root causes of social issues.
  • Prepare for the service trip.

If the group chooses to fundraise to offset out-of-pocket expenses (such as dinners) the meetings will also be used to plan fundraisers.
