FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF 2005 GRADUATES IN TEACHING

provided by:
Career Services Office, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

This report provides data on the employment, or continued educational status, of UW-SP graduates of December 2004, May and August 2005. Research was completed within a year of graduation, with the report compiled for release in the spring of 2006. Statistical information is provided, as is a detailed listing of job titles, employers and locations for graduates. Note that the report represents individuals receiving their baccalaureate degree, not individuals who already have a degree and are adding teaching certification.

The Career Services staff makes numerous attempts to collect data from each graduate. Information in this report represents contacts with 97% of the graduates or their families (222 of the 228 graduates).

Readers using this type of information in career decision-making should always consult with a career counselor, faculty member, and/or other educational professionals.

STATISTICAL REPORT CATEGORIES

Each graduate is counted only once, in spite of the fact that many complete multiple majors simultaneously. We generally list the person according to the major that appears first in the graduation printout from the Records Office and note these occurrences in our statistics with an asterisk and footnote.

Our categories and their explanations follow:

Total # of Graduates and Total # Seeking: These categories distinguish between the number of people graduating and the number who are entering the work force/pursuing additional schooling. Percentages are calculated based on the total number of graduates seeking employment or further schooling, not on the total number of graduates.

Employed In Field: Individuals who report that their work is in an educational setting related to their academic study, or whom we feel are working in an educational position that utilizes their college degree. The report

distinguishes between those employed full-time and those employed part-time in educational capacities. Full-time includes graduates employed 75% or more. Part-time includes individuals employed as teachers with less than a 75% contract, as well as individuals working as substitute teachers, coaches, or educational aides.

Employed Out of Field: Individuals reporting work that is not in a teaching setting. This includes both employment unrelated to the graduates degree as well as that which is related, but is not in an educational setting (ex: Biology major working as a Soil Conservationist).

Further Schooling: Individuals who are continuing their education in graduate or professional programs, as well as those who are returning to school for an additional major or selected course work.

Available: Graduates who are actively seeking employment but have not yet accepted a position.

Total Placed: Number of people who have secured some type of employment or are continuing their education.

Not Seeking: Individuals reporting they are not entering the work force nor pursuing further schooling. (Number not included in percentage calculations.)

No Report: Graduates whom we were unable to reach, or who were unwilling to provide the requested information. (Number not included in percentage calculations.)

DETAILED REPORT CATEGORIES

Information is organized alphabetically according to academic major with individual names omitted to maintain confidentiality. All types of employment are listed together (encompassing the statistical report categories of "employed in field" and "employed out of teaching"), followed by the list of further schooling reported. We list whatever information we acquire, and in some cases this is less than complete. Unless we are able to survey the graduate directly, we may have difficulty obtaining all the details we request (specific job title, name and location of the employer, whether the position is full-time or part-time).

Many graduates pursue teaching certification in several fields by completing multiple academic majors or minors. This opens employment options in areas other than those in the academic major under which they are listed in our report, and helps to explain, for example, how a Biology major may report being employed as a Chemistry teacher.

** Due to double majors, there were more graduates in this major than indicated. Double majors are normally counted and listed according to the major appearing first on the graduation printout from the Records Office. In addition to the teaching majors appearing above, Elementary Education contains two Spanish majors, Biology contains one Natural Science major and one Resource Management major, History contains five Social Science majors, Natural Science contains one Biology major and one Resource Management major, Physical Education contains one History major, Social Science contains eight History majors and one Psychology major. Three non-teaching multiple majors are also included in this report: one English major in Foreign Languages, one Music major in Mathematics, and one Business Administration major in Social Science.

PLEASE NOTE: Percentages are calculated based on the total number of graduates seeking employment, not the total number of graduates.

In the Communicative Disorders field (Speech-Language Pathology), a Master's degree is required for certification in Wisconsin. Twenty-one MS degrees were conferred and 95% of the recipients were employed in the field.
