OPENINGS FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN HERPETOFAUNAL
CONSERVATIONThe newly established Center for Reptile and Amphibian
Conservation and Management seeks two highly qualified
applicants for research positions at the Masters degree
level. The first position involves research focusing on developing
landscape-level assessments of the health of remaining
populations of the federally endangered copperbelly water
snake (Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta) using surveying, mark
and recapture, and GIS. This student will be supported
primarily as a research assistant, and will devote
substantial time to assisting with the development of the
Center, including administrative "chores," developing web
pages devoted to herpetofaunal conservation, and maintaining
aspects of the GIS capabilities of the center. Expertise in
GIS is not required, although experienced individuals will
be more competitive for the position. The position is
available August 1, although an earlier start date is a
possibility. We seek another student to conduct a radio telemetry study
that compares the ecology and behavior of the copperbelly
and the northern water snake (Nerodia s. sipedon). The
results from this work will help establish management
recommendations for the copperbelly in areas were it is
federally listed. The student will be supported as a
teaching/research assistant, and also help with other
projects and development of the Center. The start date for
this project is not firm as we need to finalize activities
for the 2000 season, but the latest start date is August 1.The mission of the Center is to promote the conservation of
reptiles and amphibians through research, education and
outreach. Successful applicants would join a team
investigating the ecology of a variety of endangered herps.
