Research Areas

Taxonomy, anatomy, morphology, and evolution of tropical grasses, especially the woody bamboos (Bambusoideae, especially Aulonemia) and basal grasses (Anomochlooideae and Pharoideae) of the Latin American tropics; also grasses of Madagascar.
 
Taxonomy, ecology, and conservation of plants of the western Great Lakes region, especially islands; strategies to conserve and enhance rare species populations.
 
Public outreach through the development of CD-ROMs, conventional published field guides, and online information.​

Chile Fieldwork on high-elevation Andean grasses from 6 March – 12 April 2001, in association with Dr. Paul M. Peterson, Smithsonian Institution, and Dr. Oscar Matthei, Universidad de Concepción, Chile.
Ecuador Fieldwork on high-elevation grasses from 9 May - 9 June 1990, in association with Dr. Paul M. Peterson, Smithsonian Institution.
Guyana Field work on grasses of the Kaieteur plateau and Mt. Kopinang regions, March-April, 1988, with support of the Biodiversity of the Guianas: Botany program of the Smithsonian Institution.
Brazil (Including the states of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro) to study biology of the herbaceous bamboo Anomochloa marantoidea, with support from the Smithsonian Institution Lowland Tropical Research Fund; February-March 1986.
Mexico Botanical exploration of the Reserva Biosphérica Sierra de Manantlán, Jalisco, December 1984-January 1985, collecting 800 numbers with Theodore S. Cochrane and Rafael Guzmán Mejia under the auspices of the Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico, and the University of Wisconsin, with funding from The Nature Conservancy International and the Allen Herbarium Fund.
Costa Rica December 1983-January 1984 to restudy Pharus sites visited in early 1983.
Costa Rica
& Panama		 Studied biology of the bambusoid grass genus Pharus in, January-May 1983; also general collecting in those countries, about 1,800 numbers individually and with others.
Mexico General collecting in states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, December 1981 - January 1982. Travelled extensively in Western United States, Canada and Hawaii. (30 trips, 1974-2007), with about 1,000 plant collections.
Wisconsin,
Minnesota,
& Michigan		 1975-present. In Wisconsin: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore; Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest; Black River, Flambeau River, and Northern Highlands-American Legion State Forests; Menominee, Lac du Flambeau, Red Cliff, and Bad River Indian Reservations; Door County Islands; and St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. In Michigan: Isle Royale National Park, Huron Islands, Trap Hills (Ottawa National Forest), Keweenaw Peninsula, and Grand Traverse Islands in Lake Michigan.
