WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships � March 3, 2001

UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse Capture Team Titles

     UW-Oshkosh won the men's competition and UW-La Crosse won its second straight women's title at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships Saturday in Stevens Point.

     The Titans' men's team won four titles on Saturday to finish with 184 points and win its fifth all-time title, including second in three years. UW-La Crosse's women's team also had four champions Saturday and accumulated 203 points to outdistance second place UW-Oshkosh for its 12th all-time title.

     The meet featured four men's WIAC records set Saturday and two women's records. UW-La Crosse set the men's record in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:28.02 and the Eagles set the women's 4x400 relay record in the final event of the meet with a time of 3:57.32, edging UW-Oshkosh by .25 seconds as both teams eclipsed the previous records. UW-Whitewater's Jessica Kohlman broke the women's 20-pound weight throw record with a toss of 57 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

     UW-Stevens Point's Chris Horvat broke the 800 meter record previously set in 1989 with a time of 1:53.32. UW-Oshkosh's Matt Groose was one of three runners in the 1,500 meters to surpass the previous record by finishing with a time of 3:52.27. UW-Whitewater's Jeremy Burks set the 3000 meters record with a time of 8:22.25 and earned men's track athlete of the meet honors.

     The men's field athlete of the meet was UW-La Crosse's Hans Schmidt, who won the pole vault at 17 feet.

     The most exciting race of the day was the men's 400 meters as UW-Stevens Point's Craig Gunderson and UW-La Crosse's Adam McKahan finished in a dead heat for first place with a time of 48.78 seconds.

     UW-Oshkosh's Aaron Nett captured the newly-created heptathlon event with 4,893 points, defeating teammate Jon Zweiger. Nett had won the pentathlon the past three years.

     The only other repeat winner on Saturday was UW-La Crosse's Derek Walgrave, who defended his title in the 55 meter hurdles in 7.74 seconds. UW-Oshkosh's Shannon King was the only men's athlete to win two events by winning the triple jump in 48 feet, 10 1/4 inches after winning the high jump on Friday.

     Other men's winners included Dan Tutskey of UW-La Crosse in the 55 meters in 6.41 seconds, Andrew Rock of UW-La Crosse in the 200 meters in 21.84 seconds and UW-Platteville's David Hahn in the weight throw at 58 feet, 4 inches. UW-La Crosse's 4x400 relay also won in 3:21.69.

     UW-Stevens Point's Becky Lebak was the only double winner in the women's events and was named the women's track athlete of the meet. Lebak won the 3000 meters in 10:21.86 after winning the 5000 meters on Friday.

     UW-Eau Claire's Kathy Thompson was the top field events athlete by winning the pentathlon with 3,203 points.

     The only repeat women's winners from last season were UW-La Crosse's Lisa Mickelson in the 400 meters at 58.11 seconds, UW-Oshkosh's Crystal Bullion in the 55 hurdles in 8.50 seconds and UW-Oshkosh's Jill Kincaid in the triple jump at 38 feet, 1 1/4 inches.

     Other women's winners included UW-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe in the 55 meters in 7.28 seconds, UW-La Crosse's Angela Klatt in the 200 meters in 25.26 seconds, UW-Oshkosh's Liz Woodworth in the 800 meters in 2:13.91 and UW-Stevens Point's Leah Juno in the 1500 meters in 4:45.96.

     UW-River Falls' Kady Kleven won the high jump in 5 feet, 5 3/4 inches and UW-Oshkosh won the 4x200 meter relay in 1:44.60.

      UW-Oshkosh's Bruce Coleman was named men's coach of the year and UW-La Crosse's Pat Healy was the women's coach of the year.
