Caine Sprints
to Win at WIAC Outdoor Meet
Liz Caine became the first UW-Stevens Point
female to win the 100-meter dash title in the 36-year history of the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track and field
championships to lead the Pointers on Saturday in River Falls.
Caine was seventh after the
preliminaries, but posted a time of 12.45 seconds in the finals as the
Pointers placed fifth overall.
Kyle Steiner became UW-Stevens Point�s first
WIAC outdoor men's field events athlete of the meet in winning the
decathlon.
Steiner posted a score of 6,664 points to
become the Pointers� first decathlon champion since Dave Scheuer in
1991. He was also third in the javelin at 171 feet, seven inches and
swept athlete of the meet awards after winning the indoor honor earlier
this spring.
The Pointers� men�s team placed fourth with
102 points and was one point behind third place UW-Oshkosh. UW-Stevens
Point was fifth in the women�s standings with 89 points. UW-La Crosse
swept both team titles.
Mitch Ellis won the men�s high jump title for
the second straight year with a leap of six feet, 8.25 inches.
The Pointers had three relays earn runner-up
finishes as the men�s 1600-meter relay had a time of 3:19.40 and the
3200-meter relay posted a mark of 7:47.37. The women�s 400-meter relay
clocked a second place finish in 49.25 seconds.
Peter Prusinski had an NCAA Division III
provisional mark in the shot put, finishing second with a throw of 53
feet, 0.25 inches. Beth Richter had a provisional mark in the women�s
long jump, placing third with a leap of 18 feet, 4.25 inches. She was
also third in the javelin at 119 feet, 11 inches and fourth in the
triple jump at 36 feet, 10.25 inches. |
