Complete WIAC Brackets
Jake Calhoun and Tyler Wozniak each earned
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference individual titles as
UW-Stevens Point qualified four wrestlers for the NCAA Division III
championships at Sundays conference meet in La Crosse.
Calhoun had two pins to win the 125-pound
title, while Wozniak had a pair of shutout decisions in claiming the
197-pound crown and earning outstanding wrestler honors. The Pointers added two at-large qualifiers in Craig Bollig at 184 pounds and Eric Bath at 174 pounds.
UW-Stevens Point totaled 114.5 points and
finished second at the meet for the fifth straight year and seventh time
in the past eight seasons. The Pointers have placed first or second at
15 of the past 17 conference meets. UW-La Crosse had 152.5 points and
qualified eight wrestlers for nationals in winning its 10th straight
league title. The national meet is set for March 2-3 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Following a first round
bye, Calhoun had a pin of James Williamson from Lawrence in 3:40 in the
semifinals and then pinned top-seeded Pat Parrillo of UW-La Crosse in 1:14 in the finals. He
takes a 15-6 record with nine pins into the national meet and is the
first UW-Stevens Point wrestler to win a conference title at the lowest
weight class since Jason Malchow won a 118-pound title in 1997.
Wozniak also took advantage of a first round
bye, beating UW-Oshkoshs Justin Schmalfeldt 7-0 in the semifinals and
UW-Whitewaters Mike Schmidt 4-0 in the finals. Wozniak was the top seed
and improved to 31-4 for the season, including 13-0 since moving up to
197 pounds. He is the ninth UW-Stevens Point athlete to earn Most
Outstanding Wrestler honors and the fourth in the past five years.
Bollig pinned Matt Beschta of UW-Platteville
in the opening round and then defeated Karl Voeck of UW-Whitewater 3-2
in the semifinals before losing to UW-La Crosses Jason Lulloff, the
nations top-ranked 184-pounder, by a 7-1 score in the finals. He owns a
22-7 overall record.
Bath posted a first round pin, but lost to
Adam Dorner of UW-Oshkosh 4-1 in the semifinals. He rallied with two
more pins over Josiah Miller of UW-Eau Claire and Adam Moe of
UW-Whitewater to place third. Bath is now 13-5 with eight pins for the
season.
