Pointers Pull
Out Tight Wins to Beat UW-Oshkosh
UW-Stevens Point got a first period pin from
Jake Calhoun and five victories by three points or less to pull out a
wrestling dual match victory over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at the Quandt
Fieldhouse in Stevens Point.
Calhoun pinned his 125-pount opponent in 2:09
to help the Pointers win their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference opener and improve to 6-0 for the season. UW-Stevens Point is
ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III, while 30th-ranked UW-Oshkosh fell
to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC.
After an opening forfeit at 141 pounds, the
Pointers edged the Titans in four straight close matches. Mo Malone won
2-1 at 149 pounds and Chris Brown followed with a 2-0 shutout at 157
pounds. Josh Ison needed overtime to win 4-2 at 165 pounds and Eric Bath
won 5-2 at 174 pounds. Tyler Wozniak gave the Pointers a 16-6 lead with
a 12-0 major decision win at 184 pounds. Jered Kern finished the night
with another close victory in a 4-2 triumph at 133 pounds.
The Pointers compete at the UW-Parkside Open
on Saturday in Kenosha.
