Pointers Drop Final Two
Matches of Iowa Swing
A stretch of seven out of nine matches against
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition ended with a pair
of losses to nationally-ranked foes for the UW-Stevens Point wrestling
team on Sunday in Iowa.
The Pointers, ranked 19th in the NCAA Division
III, lost to 16th-ranked Loras 21-19 in Dubuque to open the day and then
fell to second-ranked Wartburg 36-9 later in the day in Waverly. The two
defeats dropped the Pointers to 9-7 overall. UW-Stevens Point faced
seven of the nine schools from one of the nation�s strongest conferences
during the past six weeks, winning two of the matches.
Jake Calhoun and Tyler Wozniak each won twice
and recorded pins for the Pointers. Calhoun had a first period pin
against Loras and opened the Wartburg match with a 9-2 victory at 125
pounds. Wozniak earned a first period pin at 197 pounds against Wartburg
and finished off the Loras match with a 3-1 decision in the final bout
of the match. Kyle Mueller added a first period pin against Loras at 141
pounds and Chris Brown had a major decision win against the Duhawks at
157 pounds.
The Pointers host UW-Parkside, which is ranked
18th in Division II, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Berg Gym.
