Mueller's Dramatics Lift Pointers Past Blugolds

Its hard to create a more dramatic moment than the conclusion of Saturdays wrestling dual between UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire as the Pointers Kyle Mueller recorded a takedown with one second left to win his 141-pound match and give his team a 24-18 victory at Berg Gym.

Mueller trailed 3-2 in the waning seconds and spun around UW-Eau Claires Andy Johnston before putting him on the mat moments before the final buzzer sounded for the 4-3 win. The team score would have ended in a tie had Johnston prevailed.

UW-Stevens Points victory gives the Pointers a share of first place in the final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet standings with UW-La Crosse as they finished 5-1 in the league and 12-8-1 overall. UW-Eau Claire ended the regular season 4-2 in the WIAC and 12-6 overall. The Pointers are ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III and the Blugolds are ranked 28th.

After UW-Eau Claires Dave Vanevenhoven opened the match with a pin at 149 pounds, the Pointers 157-pounder Jake Wozniak evened the match with a pin in 1:42.

The Blugolds won the next two matches by decision with Lance Valiquette earning an 8-2 win at 165 pounds and Joey Miller winning 9-8 on a takedown with five seconds left in the match at 174 pounds. UW-Stevens Point tied the match at 12-12 with a pin from Craig Bollig in 4:23 at 184 pounds.

The Pointers took a three-point lead on an 8-5 win from 197-pound junior Dustin Robinson, who won both matches this weekend in his first official varsity competition.

The Blugolds got wins from Justin McAuly at heavyweight by a 3-2 score and Andy Miller at 133 pounds by an 8-4 count, but the Pointers benefited from a forfeit at 125 pounds to hold their three-point cushion entering Muellers contest.
