Pointers Knock Off Buena Vista at Dubuque Duals

     UW-Stevens Point posted a 23-22 win over 11th-ranked Buena Vista (Iowa), but lost its other two matches at Saturday�s University of Dubuque Duals in Dubuque, Iowa.

     The 14th-ranked Pointers are now 8-2 overall after falling to Dubuque 24-17 and to William Penn, the fourth-ranked team in the NAIA, 28-13. Tyler Wozniak had two pins and technical fall at 184 pounds and Craig Bollig also had three wins at 197 pounds, including a triumph over fourth-ranked Ben Strandberg of Buena Vista.

     Needing a pin in the final match against Buena Vista, Jered Kern delivered the dramatic win for the Pointers, pinning the nation's second-ranked 133-pounder, Justin Hulegaard 35 seconds into the second period for the victory. Wozniak recorded a pin with one second left in his match to provide key team points in the one-point victory. Mo Malone at 149 pounds and Jake Calhoun at 125 pounds also each provided extra team points with major decision victories.

     Calhoun had a pin and Wozniak recorded a technical fall against Dubuque, while Wozniak had a pin and Bollig collected a major decision win against William Penn.

     The Pointers travel to face third-ranked UW-La Crosse on Wednesday.
