Mike Hayes
had a takedown with five seconds remaining in the final match of the night
to cap a UW-Stevens Point rally past UW-Parkside 22-19 in a matchup of
nationally-ranked wrestling squads Wednesday in Stevens Point.
With the
match tied at 1-1, Hayes took down Matt Meyer to finish off UW-Stevens
Point�s fourth straight victory to close the match and come back from a
19-6 deficit.
The Pointers
are now 10-6 overall and ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III, while UW-Parkside
is 2-3 and ranked 13th in Division II. It was UW-Stevens Point�s seventh
match against a ranked opponent in the last 10 days.
Cody Koenig,
who is ranked fourth in Division III at 174 pounds, started the rally with
a major decision victory and Craig Bollig followed with a pin at 184
pounds. Mitch Szwet also won a dramatic match at 197 pounds, posting a
takedown with one minute left to break a 2-2 tie for an eventual 6-2
victory.
The Pointers
will wrestle Saturday at UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
