Pointers Finish Eighth at National Duals

UW-Stevens Point won its second round consolation match, but lost its next two matches on Saturday at the national wrestling duals in Cleveland, Ohio to finish eighth for the weekend.

The Pointers, who split their first two matches on Friday, won their next match 31-9 over 10th-ranked John Carroll (Ohio) before a 28-6 setback to fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse and a 29-9 loss to sixth-ranked Ithaca (N.Y.). UW-Stevens Point is ranked 14th nationally and is now 9-6 for the season. The Pointers competed against six ranked teams, including five top 10 squads during the past week.

Ed Wynimko recorded a pin at 165 pounds and Joel Burdick had a major decision win at 141 pounds in the win over John Carroll. Burdick also posted victories against UW-La Crosse and Ithaca, while Cody Koenig won all three of his matches at 174 pounds, including a 3-1 win over third-ranked Mark Hawald of John Carroll. Mike Hayes had a forfeit win at heavyweight against John Carroll and won his match against Ithaca.

The Pointers host UW-Parkside on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Berg Gym.
