Pointer Wrestlers Split Matches on First
Day of National Duals
The University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point wrestling team dropped their opening match at the
National Duals hosted by Cleveland State University, but rebounded to win
their first match in the consolation bracket.
In the preliminary round, the
Pointers won four of ten matches, but couldn't overcome the College of New
Jersey, falling 19-13. Joel Burdick scored the biggest victory earning a
major decision over Tony Crespo 15-5 at 141 pounds. Ed Wynimko (165
pounds), Cody Koenig (174) and Mike Hayes (heavyweight) also scored
victories by decision.
The Pointers were relegated to
the consolation bracket where they manhandled Case Western Reserve (Ohio)
46-3. The Spartans forfeited four matches and the Pointers claimed five of
the remaining six bouts for the easy victory. Wynimko and Hayes earned
victories by pins, while Greg Metzler (157) won by a major decision. Jon
Burdick (149) and Mitch Szwet (197) also wrestled for victories.
The Pointers are now 8-4 on the
season and ranked 14th in the country. They will resume competition at the
National Duals on Saturday when they face Coe College (Iowa) in a
consolation semifinal at 8:00 a.m.
