Pointers Snap Eagles' WIAC Winning Streak

UW-Stevens Point earned its first wrestling victory over UW-La Crosse since 1999 and snapped the Eagles 24-match Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winning streak with a 19-17 victory in a matchup of top 10 teams Tuesday at Berg Gym in Stevens Point.

The Pointers are ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III and beat the third-ranked Eagles for the first time since Jan. 24, 1999. That loss was also the Eagles most recent in WIAC competition as they posted four straight 6-0 seasons before dropping Tuesdays conference opener.

UW-Stevens Point opened up a 10-0 lead after the first three matches. David Davila posted a 14-5 major decision victory over Tom Tribon at 125 pounds, Brady Holtz pulled out a 4-2 win over David Silva at 133 pounds and Joel Burdick beat Adam Kuchnia 10-6 at 141 pounds.

UW-La Crosses Troy Fabry, ranked third nationally at 149 pounds, had a major decision over Ryan Hansen 24-10 and Ross Needham beat Greg Metzler 9-4 to pull the Eagles to within 10-7.

UW-Stevens Points Ed Wynimko posted one of the key victories of the night, decisioning Derek Hebrink 5-3 at 165 pounds and Cody Koenig, ranked third in the nation at 174 pounds, defeated Nick Patenaude 9-3 as the Pointers pushed the lead back to 16-7.

Jason Lulloff, ranked third nationally at 184 pounds, pinned UW-Stevens Points Justin McAuly in 1:01 to bring the Eagles to within 16-13. However, Yan White, the nations top-ranked 197-pounder, posted an 8-1 win over Jim Swanson for a 19-13 lead.

UW-La Crosses Ryan Allen, the nations top-ranked heavyweight, had Mike Hayes on his back to end the second period, but couldnt record the pin and picked up four team points with the 11-0 win.

UW-Stevens Point is now 2-0 overall, while UW-La Crosse fell to 5-3. The Pointers compete at UW-Platteville on Thursday.
