Koenig's Streak Stopped in
Augsburg Open Final

Junior Cody Koenig had the
longest winning streak in UW-Stevens Point wrestling history snapped at 43
matches on
Saturday in a 5-3 loss to Augsburg�s Joe Moon in the 174-pound finals at
the Augsburg Open in Minneapolis.
Koenig, the nation�s top-ranked 174-pounder,
finished 36-0 while winning the national title last year. He had won his
first seven matches of this season, including three on Saturday, before
the loss to Moon, who is ranked third in the country. Koenig beat Moon in
all three meetings last year, including a pin in the national semifinals.
Koenig�s last loss was a 3-2 defeat to
Lakeland�s Lee Kadinger at 165 pounds at the 2002 national championships.
On Saturday, he posted 7-4 wins over Adam Gosiak of St. John�s and Nick
Patenaude of UW-La Crosse, while also pinning Corey Renig of Wartburg.
Ed Wynimko placed sixth in the 165-pound gold
division after posting two wins, while Joel Burdick won two matches in the
149-pound gold division to place eighth.
Also, Ryan Hansen won three matches and placed
fifth in the 157-pound silver division and Jason Callin won his first two
matches in the 149-pound silver bracket and placed fourth. Matt Lapinski
was sixth at 149 pounds. |
