White's Runner-Up Finish Helps Pointers Place Ninth
at NCAA Championships Yan White
finished runner-up at 197 pounds for the second straight year at the NCAA
Division III Wrestling Championships to lead UW-Stevens Point
to its second straight top 10 team finish at Saturday�s meet in Dubuque,
Iowa.
The Pointers placed ninth overall after a third
place finish last year. Wartburg defended its national title, edging
Augsburg for the team crown.
White finished the season with a 20-3 record,
dropping all three matches to Wartburg�s Akeem Carter, including a 4-2
decision in the national title match. White joined Perry Miller as the
only Pointers ever to reach three straight championship matches after
pinning Robert Cuffie of Brockport State (N.Y.) in the semifinals in 4:59.
Cody Koenig, the defending national champion at
174 pounds, lost to Augsburg�s Joe Moon for the second time this season by
a 4-2 decision in the semifinals. He beat Jason Shivak of Delaware Valley
(Penn.) 6-5 in a wrestleback, but then lost to Mark Hawald of John Carroll
(Ohio) 4-2 in the third place match to finish the season 32-4 overall.
Brady Holtz earned his second straight
All-American honor at 133 pounds by finishing sixth overall. The senior
beat Quent Christenson of Simpson 7-2 in a consolation match and was
pinned by Barry Wise of Delaware Valley in 50 seconds before being pinned
by Mike Troast of York (Penn.) in 2:27 in his final match. |
