Superior Makes Most of Only Power Play in 1-0 Win

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point committed just one penalty on Sunday, but it proved costly as UW-Superior cashed in with a power play goal on its only opportunity and came away with a 1-0 womens hockey victory at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Yellowjackets went on the power play midway through the first period and earned the games only goal when Vi Theofylatos poked in a rebound off a shot by Erin Kegley at the 12:24 mark. UW-Superior then relied on a stout penalty kill and goaltender Melissa Kunzelman as UW-Stevens Point was shutout for the first time this season.

UW-Superiors victory was a key win in the tightly-contested Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings as the Yellowjackets, also ranked fifth nationally, improved to 15-4-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the league after snapping a four-game winless streak. UW-Stevens Point had a three-game winning streak end and fell to 12-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the NCHA. The Pointers are ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III.

UW-Stevens Point had six power play chances that all came in the final two periods, including a five-on-three power play that lasted 1:04 during the second period. However, the Yellowjackets limited the Pointers chances and Kunzelman allowed very few rebound opportunities.

The Pointers held a 21-18 advantage in shots, including 18-8 in the final two periods, but were shutout for the first time in 38 games dating to a loss last season at Bowdoin (Maine). Amy Statz made 17 saves for UW-Stevens Point in the loss.
