Pointers Use Late Rally For Season-Opening Win

Box Score

Nicole Grossmann scored with 3:42 left in the third period as UW-Stevens Point notched a pair of late goals to rally for a 2-1 road victory at St. Thomas on Friday in a matchup of nationally-ranked women's hockey squads in St. Paul, Minn.

The season-opening victory came in the debut of Pointers' coach Ann Ninnemann, who was named the team's head coach in August after playing for the team from 2001-05.

St. Thomas, ranked eighth in the country, scored the game's first goal at the 18:09 mark of the first period on a goal by Alison Turgeon.

UW-Stevens Point, ranked sixth nationally, failed on six power play chances and finally scored on the seventh try midway through the third period when Lauren Kellin scored with assists from Rachael Graves and Sarah Phillips to tie the game. Grossmann then scored unassisted for her sixth career game-winning score.

UW-Stevens Point held a 29-26 advantage in shots with Amy Statz making 25 saves for her 52nd career victory. The Pointers play again Saturday at St. Olaf at 2 p.m.
