Pointers' Comeback Win Over Oles

Freshman Tracy Butler scored
two goals and assisted Jessica Edward on the game-winner with 58 seconds
remaining as UW-Stevens Point rallied for a dramatic 5-4 women's hockey
victory over St. Olaf on Tuesday at Ice Hawks Arena.
With the Pointers trailing 4-3
in the third period, Butler scored an unassisted goal with 8:57 left,
rebounding her own shot that was saved to tie the game. Butler, who had two
career goals entering the game, then passed to Edward, who broke free behind
the defense for her third goal of her freshman season.
UW-Stevens Point, ranked sixth
in the NCAA Division III, is now 8-2-1 overall and was playing for the first
time after a 34-day layoff. St. Olaf is now 5-4-1 and also lost to the
Pointers 7-1 in the opening game of the season.
The Pointers jumped out to a
quick two-goal lead as Nicole Grossmann scored a shorthanded goal at the
6:41 mark and Butler scored her first goal with an assist from Michelle
Sosnowski at the 14:46 mark.
St. Olaf's Lindsey Boeser
scored at the 16:07 mark of the period and the Oles tied the game on a power
play goal by Tessa Christensen at the 9:21 mark of the second period.
UW-Stevens Point committed two penalties at the same whistle midway through
the second period, giving the Oles a full two-minute, two-man advantage.
They converted less than a minute into the power play with a goal from Janae
Fabini for a 3-2 lead.
Grossmann tied the game at the
17:01 mark of the second period, rebounding a shot from Sosnowski on a
two-on-one breakaway for her second goal and fifth this year against St.
Olaf. However, the Oles, who were three-for-seven on the power play, scored
again on a man-advantage at the 3:34 mark of the third period with a goal
from defender Kari McClintick on a long shot from the point.
St. Olaf pulled the goalie for
the final 58 seconds, but was unable to get a shot on goal during the final
flurry. It was only the second time in Pointers' history they have won a
game when allowing four goals with the other coming earlier this year
against Gustavus Adolphus. Amy Statz made 16 saves in goal, while Sarah
Mills stopped 26 shots for the Oles. |
