Darud and Nelson Lead Win Over St. Catherine

Box Score

Sophomore Madison Darud notched her first career hat trick and Kellye Nelson tied a single-game school record with five assists as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team routed St. Catherine 9-1 on Friday at Ice Hawks Arena.

Darud was the only UW-Stevens Point player with multiple goals as seven different players recorded goals and three others had assists. Nelson entered the game with one career assist and tied the record held by Tracy Truckey against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 15, 2002.

The win marked a season-high scoring total for the Pointers, who improved to 9-2-1 overall. St. Catherine had just 12 players in uniform for the game and fell to 0-10-1 overall.

UW-Stevens Point scored four times in the first period with Nicole Grossmann, Darud, Jenna Daggit and Michelle Sosnowski recording goals. Nelson assisted the final two goals of the period and also helped on Nicole Greeneway's second period goal and a goal from Darud to open the third period.

Jessie Suter and Tracy Butler added goals for an 8-0 lead before St. Catherine's Aryn Ball scored a power play goal with 2:23 left in the game, denying a shutout for Pointers' goalie d'Andra Phillips in her first collegiate game. Darud scored just 27 seconds later with assists from Nelson and Greeneway to finish the scoring.

Darud also had an assist for a four-point game, while Greeneway had two assists in addition to her goal. Phillips made seven saves in the victory as the Pointers outshot the Wildcats 48-8, including 24-3 in the final period.
